Anyone experience missing files using NDMP backup on Celerra?

Question

I have a Celerra NS702G (Version: 5.5.20) using CLARiiON CX700 backend storage. Backup software is HP Data Protector 5.5. The Data Protector backup of a CIFS filesystem via NDMP appears to not back up all files, because an attempted restore only shows a subset of the files. Has anyone had this issue? Very difficult to determine if problem lies with EMC, HP, or both.

You can fix this by applying Site Specific Patch SSPNT550 released by HP. All files are backed.. You need to restore the entire catalog for a specific file.

The NDMP backups make use of BTREE data structure to
represent the entire directory tree structure that is
being backed up (parent/child relationship). The BTREE
add functionality was not handling the situation where
the nodes in the BTREE need to be split.

to handle the situation which requires the BTREE nodes
to be split

i dont know if its the reason of your problem ..but are you making backup from a snapsure checkpont or directly from the file system ?

Backup is being made directly from the filesystem.

take a look at the file list of the backup.The question is whether these files are actually missing in the backup or if they are not getting restored.My guess would be some difficulties with DAR/DDAR

I'm not familiar with DP, but I assume as with any other backup product you can run query against specific backup set and see what files are inside. Same should be for DP too. Do this and that will give you answer if data you are after has been backed up in the first place. Are you trying to restore from full backup or differential one?

I run a FULL backup, followed by a restore using Data Protector's Windows-based GUI client. Actually, I am not sure how to run the Data Protector report or listing of each file that was included in the FULL backup.

I'm afraid if you do not have more information the Forum cant help much

You should open a case with HP and EMC then to determine if you have the latest patches and troubleshoot

looking at the data mover log if there are any errors during backup/restore wouldn't hurt
Also if there is any pattern to what files/dirs are missing

I acquired from HP the SIte Specific Patch SSPNT550 and applied it to the Data Protector Cell Manager. I ran a full backup of the CIFS filesystem. I deleted a subset of files in one folder of the CIFS filesystem. From the Windows-based Data Protector interface I selected a restore of the entire folder, with no attempt at restoring only specific files within. All the files were restored that I had manually deleted. This behavior is acceptable. Thank you, Erik.

I have had better luck and performance checkpointing filesystems prior to backing up to TSM. The only thing that's missing is DDAR. We can restore files very quickly, but it we have to restore a folder (dir) we have to scan the whole backup image.
