Does CX4-240 support SCSI READ/WRITE BUFFER diagnostic command?
Hi,
Below is my config,
Array - CX4-240
Initiator - Winodws 2012 with MPIO and Qlogic adapter
Switch - Qlogic 5600 & 5800 (Multipathing)
I am trying to run Read/Write Buffer test and the result i am getting is UNSUPPORTED. Going through some of the documents related to this gives me a hint as these commands are vendor specific. I am wonderting whether CLARIION support this.
THanks in advance...
Cheers,
VIshnu

Suman,
Thanks for responding, the document i was refering was the User Guide of the Qlogic HBA. It has a NOTE mentioning that not all the device support this READ/WRITE BUFFER tests.
Below is the extract from the log,
9459 9B-D8-99-DB-B3-C0-8D-3A R/W Buffer not supported (PID=01-05-00)
Jul 12 04:21:42 AM : Debug: Skipping Target (50-06-01-68-3c-e0-65-77) R/W buffer
test not supported.
When i run the same test on Hitachi target, it works fine.

Vishnu,
you wrote : Initiator - Winodws 2012 with MPIO and Qlogic adapter.
I would like to know is this win 2012 a typo error or its some initiator version in which you are facing issues.
Thanks

There are some things different between vendors, about communicating with their storage array. For example I know that IBM has to have a file called the "ODM" in place, which tells the host what the storage is so it talks properly.
It would be difficult to say how it works. I can't tell you preciously how the hba vendor tools works. However, I am curious enough to know why it is not working on CLARiiON! Is it CLARiiON Access Logix which is preventing the output? or as vendor has already mentioned that it won't work on some of the storage system which might include CX4. If it is possible for you can you check with HBA Vendor that which Storage Arrays are compatible with that tool?

Just a quick note, EMC does not yet support Windows 2012, only 2008. Vendor tools may not work on the EMC arrays, check with the vendor for supported configurations.

Okay, well tdvishnu
After a discussion me and glen came to below conclusion:
1. It could be HBA drivers for Windows 2012 RC which might be in beta version and not tested yet. (but still doesn't explain why it works on Hitachi)
2. The tool is a vendor specific and provides output for only certain storage systems. (as it mentions in the manual)
You will need to check that with Qlogic. Let us know if you get any answers.

Thanks Ankit and Glen,
1. I should have specified Win 2012 RC, my bad. Anyways i tried with Win 2008 and also see the same result.
2. As per your reply, i understand that EMC doesn't block these commands and support 100%. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Nope that wasn't the reply, As far as my understanding goes EMC doesn't block SCSI Protocol!
The tool you are using is a third party tool and not sure which commands actually its sending on the backend, moreover manual itself says not all devices are supported, as you tested it on Windows 2008, I am assuming it includes EMC CLARiiON too! However, you may ask Qlogic Support to specify that which are the devices it doesn't work on!

While you are following up with QLogic to verify results/compatibility, I'm thinking that based on the limited logs, reference to: 50-06-01-68-3c-e0-65-77 is one of the passive paths; however, the host (when properly configured with either MPIO or PowerPath) should not be aware of which are inactive/not-ready. You mention that you are using Windows 2008 MPIO in your test, and we do require that on the CLARiiON, you configure the host for ALUA (failover mode of 4 as part of the Navisphere/Unisphere host registration). If you aren't familiar with this, you can search the forums as it has been discussed several times.
1) Can you verify that you registered the server with Navisphere/Unisphere failover mode of 4 (Connectivity Status)?
If not, then we can assist you to update it as is required. For now simply gathering information before providing detailed steps (already discussed in the forums though). Also, keep in mind when changing between failover modes, the host requires a reboot so you may need to plan for that.
2) Can you provide more information on the QLogic card such as model?
Or have you already confirmed it is a supported card (and driver) via E-Lab Interoperability Navigator (ESM)?
3) Can you run the host grab and generate an E-Lab Advisor report?
Scan the results for any warnings (yellow and/or red).
4) Can you provide the version of FLARE you are running?
This will help provide more information on the ALUA implementation supported by your array
If you need any assistance with any of the above, I will gladly provide references and as much detailed steps as is required. For now, I am simply looking for more information; then again, you may have already considered everything above.

Hi Vishnu,
Still doe the Read/Write Buffer test and the result i am getting is UNSUPPORTED.
Also to generate the elab in powerlink on the extreme right there is a drop down list in which you find a option as Launch e-Lab Navigator. That is your go for elab.
The latest Flare for rel 29 is : CX4 Series FLARE OE Bundle 04.29.000.5.019
You can upgrade to the same also.
Thanks
