Storage groups, LUN assignments, and MSCS clustering for SQL

I'm building a SQL cluster on our CX300. We've done testing and have settled on RAID 10 for logs and RAID 5 LUNs for data, backups, and quorum.

The servers are Server 2003 x64, and will be Active/Passive. The T-Logs and two SQL data targets are each in their own RAID group. We also have a RAID group set up with two RAID 5 LUNs, one for backups, one for quorum. I will create the partitions using diskpart and align=64. We will use a 64k allocation unit as per the SQL BPG for everything but quorum and backups.

My question is how to assign these LUNs to the servers. On one hand I could create a single storage group and put everything there. On the other hand I could create two storage groups, one for each server, and then attach the LUNs to both SGs. The first configuration would be simpler, but the second would provide SG redundancy. I don't have any experience with either method at this point, but would love to avoid making a mistake. I would love to search the forums to see if this question has been asked, but I get 0 results no matter what I search for. I have also been through the BPG and fundamentals .pdfs, which were fantastic. Anyone have any suggestions for me? SS

Putting all the LUNs and Hosts in a single Storage Group for a MCS cluster is the best choice. Using two Storage Groups does not provide any redundancy and creates a more complicated configuration than necessary.

If you haven't already, download the whitepapers Glen referenced. Those are great references for your environment.

Other than that it looks like you are on track to me, my environment is 90% SQL clusters on Server 2003 x64, and I don't see any problems with what you referenced.

One note though, the MSDTC resource for SQL clusters should be in it's own Cluster Resource Group which will require a separate IP, name, and LUN for the MSDTC resource. I usually carve 1GB Quorum and MSDTC LUNs out of the first five disk in Bus 0 Encl 0 as it is the FLARE and PSM area and I don't usually put any production LUNs on those disks. The Quorum and MSDTC resources use their LUNs so lightly and infrequently that you can pretty much put them anywhere you have some free space in a RAID Group, although ideally it would be in a RAID group that is being accessed by the same hosts.

One SG would be normal practise for a cluster.

Out of curiosity what will you be doing with System DBs, TempDB and MSDTC?

I hope this helps

I would suggest that you review the following from PowerLink:

"EMC Solutions for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CLARiiON CX3 Series FCP"
"EMC CLARiiON Database Storage Solutions: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005"
"EMC CLARiiON Best Practices for Fibre Channel Storage: CALRiiON Release 24 Firmware Update 24"

Do a search and you should find a bunch of papers.

Things seem to have progressed well. I established a RAID group on the first 5 disks and created two 1gb LUNs there, one for the Quorum and one for MSDTC. I will be careful to leave those disks lightly accessed. I appreciate all the fast responses. Thanks! SS
