Dell Compellent SNMP get Free Space

Hi all,

we are trying to monitor our Compellent Storage Centers via SNMP. I cannot find the right value in the Defined Types available to monitor the Global Free Space.

The default type reports only Free Space into the Disk Folder Assigned, but this is not the correct value, because it doesn't consider the unallocated space.

Could you help me please?

Hello Michele,

Can you let us know; What is the version of Storage Center you are using?

Also what is the storage model you are working with?

Hi Charles, SCOS 7.5.x and 7.4.x, models SC9000, SC5020, SCv3020.

I dont think that it exists the value that inclued also unallocated space.

Which default type are you using?

Are you following this guide?

Dell OpenManage SNMP Reference Guide Version 8.1 | Dell US

Thanks

Sorry but it's not clear to me. What should I find into the OpenManage reference guide? I'm using PRTG Monitoring system.

As mentioned, I'm using  default type Disk Folder Assigned, but it report Free Space only for the amount of space "assigned" so, for example you could find there is 1 TB free but you could have 10 TB free unallocated, so it's quite useless honestly.

Let me know.

Hello Michele Berardo,

I'm not familiar with PRTG, but I found they have a page that may help you:

Dell Compellent Monitoring : https://dell.to/3o66iTY

I'm not finding anything that includes Unallocated space either.

You might use threshold definitions and setting them to the tier/classes

Hello Michele Berardo,

I have not found anything to show Global Free Space.

I'll have to do some research and update you.

Hi Charles,

Dell Compellent Monitoring : https://dell.to/3o66iTY => we're just following this guide, thank you, the problem is that in the template, you can monitor Disk Folder Assigned space and not the total amount.

I'm just familiar with threshold, but I need to monitor via Monitoring System.

I think my request is quite easy and comprehensive, I want to monitor the total free space on a production storage. This is the most important aspect of a storage.

Hello Michele Berardo,

The only one in the MIB that sounds like what you are looking for would be this one:

scDiskFolderSUFreeSpace OBJECT-TYPE

SYNTAX Unsigned32

MAX-ACCESS read-only

STATUS current

DESCRIPTION "Disk Folder Storage Usage free space, in GB (1,073,741,824).

scDiskFolderSUFreeSpace = scDiskFolderSUTotalSpace2 -

scDiskFolderSUAllocSpace - scDiskFolderSUUsedSpace2.

Matches 'Unallocated disk space' on SC GUI."

::= { scDiskFolderSUEntry 8 }

the description notes how this value is calculated:

(disk folder total space) - (disk folder allocated space) - (disk folder used space) = disk folder free space

If that isn't it I don't think it's available. You may contact Support directly and an engineer can do a remote session with you.

That's the problem, the free space is calculated on the allocated space, this is a mistake, you could have much more space not allocated yet and this sensor may be falsely alerting.

I have looked for this too as snapshots are eating up my total storage space.  Agree with @Michele Berardo that this is one of the most important metrics.
