Foreign Managed disk

Hi,

We added 3 enclosures of 15K disk from a different Compellent system, and one of the disks is being shown as "Foreign Managed". How do we go about correcting this issue to allow the system to use this disk?

Hello Hugh,

I am going to send you a private message and if you can provide me with the serial# for the controllers of your Compellent I can use secure console to look into the error.  Here is the link to enable secure console if you need it. https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/how12050/dell-storage-sc-how-to-send-supportassist-and-enable-secure-console?lang=en

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sam,

We don't have support on the system, hence why I'm posting in the forum.

Per a very old guide: Foreign Managed: A disk that is recognized by this Storage Center system but not managed by it. A Foreign Managed disk could have been managed previously by another Storage Center system or another manufacturer. When the disk is assigned, it becomes Managed.

I am not certain this is true any longer.

After I "managed" the disk. It appears to be stuck in the "Transitioning" control type, and never becomes available for user data. If I try and unmanage the disk, it gets stuck doing that too. And the only option is to revert back to managed.

Andrew,

I have not been able to clear the state on this drive. I have swapped out other drives since this one, and it has successfully removed the foreign disk state. I think maybe I added the first drive incorrectly, and now it's stuck in that state. I have not tried replacing it with a difference drive, but maybe that will fix it.

Regards,

Hugh

Hi McDaid,

I too have a disk stuck in the transitioning stage on my old Compellent.  Do you recall how you resolved your issue?  I did not have the same original issue, but am at the same point as you.

I have a compellant sc5020 and the drives apart from the header show foreign. Does anyone know the command to revert these back to normal.

Help!!

Hi,

Do you have a validated backup of the data? Since this is a potential data loss situation it is recommended that you call phone support.

https://dell.to/3yYZIhW Page 67 I would start with a restart, I don’t see any CLI commands that allow clearing the foreign state. You may also want to physically reseat a drive and see if it picks it back up.

I've tried the simultaneous restart  doesn't make any difference there must be a command to clear a disk or something similar?

All the commands for the CLI are in that document. You will have more options in management software. Page 272 https://dell.to/36BvV2y

I just cant seem to find the right option its crazy how easy this same command is on other setups. All i can think of is taking each disk out and running a disk cleaner across it. Seems a crazy way though.

I have not been able to find a command for it.

I have actually resolved it

The only way i could do it was to factory reset the box with the drives in situ. When the device comes back online all the drives are ready again.

Hope this helps anyone else.
