Move active volume from existing host to new host
Dear Dell Support,
I need to get some advise regarding the storage compellent that we bought for our external customer this year. Previously there is no issue on the volumes that i created and assigned accordingly to each servers mapping that i have done before. in the earlier designed architecture diagram, our external customer requested to provision certain volume and mapping to 2 clusters, which is cluster 1 is consist email exchange + AD and cluster 2 is application. at the same time there is single dedicated server also been created without join any cluster. I did create 2 separate volume and name as AD+Email Exchange - 10Tb and another volume Application - 20Tb.
After a while, they change their mind and ask me to move AD+Email exchange-10Tb volume from dedicated server to cluster 1 which consist others OpCos AD+Email exchange. Could i move the volume as per request by our external customer without data corruption and mapping back the volume 10Tb from dedicated server to server cluster 1? if yes, what is step, can anyone advise me.
Your guidance and feedback on this matter really appreciated.

Are you just trying to move a volume from the single server mapping to a cluster mapping? Is this a virtualized environment?
Two things that you can do to solve this issue (if i'm understanding what you are asking):
1. Assuming this is a virtualized environment you can map the volumes to the cluster that are currently mapped to that one server. Once mapped to the cluster you can vmotion the VMs off the current host to the cluster hosts. Once moved you can then remove the single server from the volumes then remove them from compellent.
2. You can add the server to the cluster without losing the current mappings. Copilot can confirm (call and ask) but the mappings are based off cluster and server objects. As you move servers in and out of clusters they retain the mappings you set individually on the server itself. IE if i have volume A and B mapped to a server not in a cluster, then i move that server into a cluster that can see volume C that server retains volume A and B's mapping and gets the volume C mapping as well. Alternatively if you remove that same server from the cluster it will lose the C volumes mapping (because remember it's only getting that mapping from the cluster it's not specifically mapped to that server) but you will still retain A and B's volumes because they were specifically mapped to that volume.
Your safest *** IMO is if this is a virtualized environment map the volume that has your servers to the cluster you want. Then vmotion over within your hypervisor. Once over you can do whatever you want to that outside server.

Yes from single server (dedicated) to the cluster server. Yes it is a virtualized environment using Hyper-V.

How do I mapped the volume from Single server dedicated to cluster server before? and how the vmotion work from VMs?

How should I have appointment with co-pilot to have this session? Since I have another task with co-pilot to upgrade the storage we purchase before? Sincerely I’m don’t have so much experience in Dell storage environment.

Answer to your questions:
1. If and only if you are in a virtualized environment (which you are) you can map a single volume to multiple servers. This should be avoided in non-virtualized environments because you don't want to have two servers having authoritative access to a volume - if you do you most likely will encounter data corruption unless you specify one server having read only access. In a virtualized environment (VMware and Hyper-V) the hypervisor actually dictates what servers (in this case VMs) have access to what data within each volume. So you can technically map one volume (say Exchange) to multiple Hypervisors because the Hypervisor will do the volume management and ensure no two servers are accessing the same data on that volume at the same time. In this case you would simply right click the volume that is mapped to the single server and in Compellent map it to another server (you will get a warning about having multiple servers mapping to that volume but this is okay in a virtualized environment). Once you configure the second mapping you can move the virtual machines from one hypervisor to another within your virtualized environment. We run VMWare so i can't give you step-by-step instructions for Hyper-V. If you don't know how to do the above you really should be calling copilot and have your virtualization engineer with you.
