You can do so, however it is advisable that you do so connected to the serial connection, else as soon as you change the switch management port IP address, through CLI via telnet or SSH, the session will be lost due to the changed IP adderss, though you may reconnect using the new IP.

So if you have problems with your ethernet connection to a FC switch, you can fool around with the ipaddrset command without any issues !
