Help with bringing personal computer customization back!

I'm sad.  My husband and I have been loyal Dell customers for many years. I've decided that it's time to add a desktop and upgrade to a new laptop (currently using Inspiron 7706 2n1 17inch) Unfortunately, it doesn't look like my upgraded laptop purchase will be with Dell, and that makes me sad.

About 16 years ago when I purchased my first higher-end (XPS at the time) laptop, I could fully customize the machine. From the colors of the lid and keyboard to the amount and types of ports, to the other features, like adding a numeric keyboard it was a great selection at the time. Fast forward to today, I believe the benefits of standardization and lean manufacturing are taking away from personalization options.  I'm unable to get a Dell 17 (or 18) inch screen 2 in 1 laptop, in all silver, that also has a numeric keyboard and extra ports. Nor can I customize such a laptop as a sole user with little-to-no purchasing power.

So, for the first time in over 20 years, while I am purchasing a Dell Desktop All-in-One, I'll be exploring other brands to upgrade my laptop. :(

The market for 17" notebooks is small and largely confined to workstation and gaming -- covered by Precision and Alienware.

The 17" XPS models are going away with the new generation -- 13, 14 and 16" are the 2024 models.  If you're looking for a 17" or 18" system, Alienware is your only option with Dell on the consumer side.

16 years ago, Dell assembled many if not most of its own notebooks.  That's no longer true -- as is the case with everyone else, they're built by ODM contractors.

If you're looking at customization, there are companies that cater to that market -- but from the major manufacturers, just about everything is pre-configured.

@ejn63 Thanks for the feedback! I love the versatility of the model I currently have but understandably, I'll need to adjust along with the rest of the market...says the person who likes to live outside of the mainstream. Haha :P

This is terrible and blasphemous. I customized my Dell XPS Tower back in 2016 and it was a great option. bring it back...

There are plenty of fully customizable options out there -- just not from the big mainstream PC vendors (Dell/HP/Lenovo).

Broaden your search.
