Let down on delivery

Ordered an R10 Ryzen (R9 3900 with 3080) for my son's Christmas present on the 22nd November. Been showing as on date all through production and OK for delivery on the 9th.

Suddenly, today, get a sorry you're not getting it until 13th January? Tried customer service line but unmanned at weekends it seems?

Is this forum watched by any CS people? Any ideas why I got my order dumped like this probably too close to Christmas to get something else decent in time?

Thanks

It is a very difficult season now. Lots of delays because of the pandemic and supply shortages. I suggest printing out the page with picture, put it in a small box and wrap it. It will be a big surprise. You are right. The offices are closed on weekends.

Thanks Mary, yeah, I was thinking of a dummy box or something. Problem is that he's sold his existing PC to go towards this one so he's not going to be able to game all through the Christmas holidays. I said I'd buy him this PC if he raised half of the cost, so he's been been saving pocket money and selling off lots of stuff to get his half in place. Feel bad for him.

I don't understand how Dell can accept the order, say it's on schedule for two weeks, then dump the bad news on us when it's too late to organize a replacement. That is really poor business practice and smacks of harvesting orders they know they cant fulfill.

Its not unique to dell. Anything tech now is backed up.

I know it wont get the product to you sooner. But if you talk to customer service they may offer you a partial refund to keep the order and wait it out.

Sadly right now you probably won't be able to order from anyone and get it by Christmas. Not unless you really want to over pay.

@Symo123

If you order the R11 from a retailer like Best Buy or Amazon, they have them pre-built and ready to arrive at your door in 7 to 10 days.    But the downside is you can't customize it, they order in bulk, all the same specs, and that is why they have them ready and sitting in the warehouse ready to ship.

When you order direct from Dell, they aren't built yet (the exception being Dell outlet is ready to ship).  Dell needs to build to your specs.  Sometimes the parts go OOS, especially high end parts like 3080/3090 or 10900K.  I suspect Dell probably had an unexpected holdup on a supplier for one of the parts in your PC.

Yeah 2020 has been a very bad year.  I just ordered my self a new R11 with the 3090 card and the order says estimated delivery of January 7th.

COVID-19 has messed with al kinds of things... so I think we all need to just chill out a bit and let businesses do what they can. in my case I know that i am not getting my new toy before the holiday and just using the time to get ready for it when it when it comes.... and just having a very small hope that i might come a bit early if i get lucky.

Had the same thing occur to me last year. They even cancelled the order and sent a link to repurchase at the original price. Guess to keep their books straight? After that, the order processed and came faster than expected.
