My Computer Doesn't Exist

This is probably against the rules but I'm sick of getting pushed around and ignored. I tell my story here and maybe someone can come to my aid, will also post in the laptop section.

=========================

I purchased a dell laptop a couple years ago, its a long story but it sat in the box unopened for almost 2 years. Has to do with an insurance claim and I had to make the purchase before I really needed it to satisfy the insurance company.

Anyway, I didn't think I would have any problems, time slipped by but I had purchased plenty of dell products before and they all worked, for the most part, pretty good. Their service was outstanding.

I purchased this computer online thru BestBuy.com

Well, I opened this thing up the other day and plugged in it and tried to fire it up.

It wouldn't turn on because i got an error message about the battery not being recognized and was not a dell battery.

Well, there's Dell printed all over the battery, the laptop and battery are brand new and never been out of the box.

I finally was able to turn the computer on via the charger and pressing f1 at a specific time. It still did not recognize the battery.

I figured I would go to the Dell site and check out my options. First I  had to register the computer on the Dell site. I entered my Service Tag and Dell did not recongnize it. The other service number express service code wasn't recognized either. So I downloaded an app from the Dell site that was supposed to search the computer for the Express code. Once downloaded it did its thing and said that my computer did not exist.

I contacted Dell support and tried to explain the situation.

After they ran all numbers including serial number they told me that Dell had no record of my computer.

Now....I could just try to buy a new battery and be done with it, but its really weird that Dell is telling me my computer doesn't exist. I ended up calling about 3 other Dell numbers, all told me the same thing and told me that it was Best Buys responsiblility. I tried emailing Dell, I tried calling again only to be told the same thing.....sir, I never experienced this but we have no record of your computer.

I really wanted to register the computer on Dell site so I could take advantage of all the benefits that Dell has regarding my computer. Drivers, apps, upgrades etc. I could not register my computer because it did not exist and no one from Dell seemed to give a rip. I was not looking for a free battery...even though it was never used and did not work in the computer, I realize the warranty period has expired.

So...off to BestBuy

Same crud with BestBuy and their Geek Squad.

"Sir, we can't find any record of this computer and its codes and serial numbers.

I called a couple of times to different places at Best Buy with no luck.

So.....there are a few BestBuy stores in my area, I took the computer in and talked to Geek guys, store managers and anyone I could get to listen to me.....same story, they couldn't do anything because they couldn't come up with the numbers and codes. But they did tell me to come back when I wanted to buy something else and they would take care of me.

I will never buy anything from Best Buy again.

I will never buy anythig from Dell again.

I was mistreated, this is a weird situation but no one wants to help. I have spent 1,000's of dollars at both Best Buy and Dell, but never again. In fact I just purchased an Epson printer, could have gotten it a little quicker and cheaper at Best Buy but I purchased on Amazon.

All I can do now is find some of those sites that allow you to share your story to embarass a particular vendor for lack of service or cruddyproduct. I'm posting here wondering if anyone has every run across this and wondered if someone might know where I could get the issure resolved on Dell.

So I'm stuck with a brand new computer that has a non functioning battery. To turn the computer on and off I have to plug and unplug the power cord and wait to get a message that tells me to press f1.....ok, its broke, things break, I  get it.  But then my computer doesn't exist, no serial number, no serice tags.....and no one cares.

Thanks

Scott

The laptop guys on the laptop board will need to troubleshoot the battery issue. Best Buy purchases our systems in bulk lots. So the laptop may have originally come from a non-Americas region. Which is why they cannot "see" it. Boot into the bios. Does the service tag there match the service tag on the label?

Thank you for your interest!

The service tag is and it is the same both on the computer and in bios. There is an Express service code . There is also a tag in the battery compartment with what looks like a serial number and QR code, I  took pic twitter.com/.../1   I don't know if that is the number of the laptop or battery, it ison the surface of  the laptop....not the battery. Made in china is all over the computer and tag. Anxious to hear your thoughts, and how or where in the forum should I approach with my battery issue?

Thanks again

Battery 4M3YM is for the Inspiron 17R 7720 computer but we no longer have that battery. Neither the service tag nor the express service code are seen in our database (Americas, Euro, Asia Pacific). But that is a moot point, Dell laptop batteries only carry a 12 month warranty. Your model came out in June 2012. Because of this, Dell cannot replace the battery. You will need to purchase one from a 3rd party online seller. Below are the Dell battery part numbers validated for this model =
P9TJ0 48WHR,6C,Dynapac
911MD 48WHR,6C,Sanyo
04NW9 48WHR,6C,SDI
YKF0M 48WHR,6C,LGC
P8TC7 48WHR,6C,Simplo
TRDF3 48WHR,6C,Simplo

Thank you

It may have come out in 2012, but I purchased at the end of2013, it was either october or november of 2013. So its less than 2 years old for me. Ive got an HP laptop that has a 5 year old batter that still works bettter than 50% or the original performance.

And....

Whats up with nobody knowing anything  about the service tags and serial number being non-existant. It does exist, I am typing with it now and I spent my hard earned cash on it. Its not a moot point because someone sold me something that doesn't exist, I can't register it on the Dell site, I can't find out what drivers etc are specific to my computer.  Really would like to clear up this mystery. Where do I go and who do I call.... can you help with that?

How can I buy a laptop from BestBuy that has Dell  written all over it and you say it doesn't exist.

I'll probably end up getting a new battery, although there is no reason why the battery that came with this computer should not be able to be identified by the computer, and no reason why it shouldn't work to some degree.

I wish I would have opened the box and  tested when it first came.....but you know what they say about hindsight. Dell and/or BestBuy should step up and show what exemplary businesses they are throw a battery at me after they solve this mystery of nonexistant sertags.

I have 2 more Dell desktops, and 2 more laptops plus purchased 2 laptops for my kids for christmas from bestbuy. I certainly will not recommend either vendor to anyone and I will tell them to avoid them like the plague. I don't care if it sat in a box for a year and a half or so.... it was new and once opened it doesn't work..... there should be some leeway there and some help offered.

I don't mean to be a jerk and I do thank you however for your efforts.

Again....if you have any numbers I might be able to call, please either send them to me or post them.

The tag issue is strange but cannot be fixed. You cannot register if the tag cannot be seen by any of our tools. I cannot explain "why" the tag is not being seen in any of our internal or external tools. All the drivers and manuals are here for that model. Even if purchased on November 2013, the battery warranty ended on November 2014.
