Hi urth56,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not working as you expected.

Here is a Forum post that addresses this situation.  Hopefully you will find this information helpful.

Thank you, I already had that BIOS version. I don't find it acceptable for such a high end device to behave like this. How can these laptops even be considered Macbook competitors if they have such trivial design flaws?

I got the 9360 back in December and returned it because of coil whine. Now I've got the 9370 (waited for 2 weeks until it finally got shipped from China to UK) and I can confirm - the coil whine is still there. At first I didn't notice, as the first evening the charging cable was not plugged it, but the next day after I plugged it in the coil whine started like a **bleep** orchestra. Without the cable plugged in and with battery settings set at "Battery saver" or "Recommended" I can barely hear it even with my ear pressed to the laptop and I believe that should be the "acceptable level", but the second I plug it in starts and never stops. Touching the screen, downloading files (this especially), watching videos, even scrolling web pages - I can hear the coil whine from 5 feet away. Such a disappointment.

I confirm: got the same specification as yours (but currently with Windows provided by Dell)  and pretty loud sounds from top-left corner of the  notebook when running on AC (it doesn't matter in which usb-c port charger is plugged-in). All available system and BIOS updates were applied.

I was wondering if all systems are affected by this or just some %? If all of them more of less have coil whine I could probably accept that, but if let's say 30% (or whatever) of all XPSs have coil whine, I'd rather get a new one and keep returning them until I get one that's not affected.

@Jofpwrote:

Do we have a fix for this?

No fix available and it will be probably not a good idea to wait for one. Sometimes altering voltage / performance of notebook might help. Change your device for another one if possible or request mainboard replacement in your current XPS (of course you can get another one with a similar problem since its not a rare issue).

Dear dell,

I bought 2-3 weeks ago your "best" premium laptop XPS 13 9370 here in UAE (Dubai). This is top specification:
- i7 Core
- 16 GB RAM
- 1TB storage
- super duper screen.

It works amazing but how it is possible that laptop for around 2.5k USD has coil whine and it is making "funny, annoying" sounds ? As I read this issue is common for XPS series from beginning (my previous 934X was free of it) .

Were are improvements from previous series ?

Were is your quality assurance check ?

Few facts:

- the level of sound is different each times

- it is happen only during charging (Looks like, the sound is starting when battery is fully charged and connected to charger)

- it is super annoying in quiet room

To answer typical questions:

- all drivers are up to date

- BIOS is up to date

- dell support test passed

Dell any real solution for this ?  When I will contact support and replace the laptop/motherboard will be it fixed or this is lottery ? How often is this issue (according to internet fame, quite popular)?

Can we get some real answers what should we do, and if this possible to fix by updating bios/drivers at all ?

For me this is real design flaw

Hi Michał,

did you solve your problem? I suffer solid coil whine, and I'm almost about returning my 9370 (i7,16gb,512ssd) cause I cannot understand how it's possible in that expensive laptop.

Kind regards / pozdro!

Hello,

no didn't have time to deal whit it. I probably need to replace/return my dell. This is such annoying in such expensive hardware. In my case sometimes there is also growling sound from fan.

... dell it should be not like that

I fnd the coil whine coming from the AC adapter for my XPS13 9370.

I can confirm the whine is coming from the block on the AC adapter. You can cover it with your hand and it will go away.

We should be able to solve the coil whine problem by simply buying a 3rd party charger.

It's a shame dell lets down such an expensive laptop with a faulty charger.

Yes, it is great piece of art but still it has some flaws. In my case fan was broken (already replaced) and still I hear coil whine from AC adapter (sic!) and laptop itself. Not always and only during charging when battery is 100% full.

In my opinion such things should not happen with such expensive, premium hardware. These sounds issues are common and dell should address this somehow.
