Bluescreen during Windows Setup

Here you find a How-To installing Windows vista 64 bit on a Dell Studio 17 Notebook.

This todo discribes the clean installation from the Windows Vista DVD supplied with your computer from scratch. I don't mean the System restore from the restore partition or any other restores!

Preparation

Go into the BIOS and turn the SATA Mode from AHCI to IDE or ATA. Otherwise you will receive a Bluescreen before the Vista Setup finishes. It seems to be that the Vista64 SP1 Setup is not able to install the OS with enabled AHCI Mode on the SATA drives. The driver that fails is the PCIIDEX.sys.

Installation

Put the Vista Setup DVD into the DVD drive an install Vista.

After installation TODO-s

Open the registry editor with Administrator rights. Then navigate to the following Key:

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci

There you will find a REG_DWORD named Start. In my case a "4" was filled in. Replace it by a "0". Close the Registryeditor now and restart the computer.

Before Windows starts go into the BIOS again and turn SATA Mode from IDE or ATA back to ahci. Now you are able to use SATA advantages like command queuing and the powermanagement features.

Windows should start normaly now without any bluescreens and so on.

I had to find out how to do this TODO without any help from Dell. I don't understand why I was not able to find a solution for my problem supplied by Dell. Didn't anyone reinstall his Studio 17 Notebook? I am sure that problems must have been occured in the past.
