Some Navigation Notes [Incomplete]

Disclaimer: This wiki is not official Dell documentation but is compiled by Philip Yip (Dell Community Rockstar natakuc4).

Start Menu

While on the desktop the start menu can be activated by moving the mouse to the bottom left corner. Alternatively the [Windows] key may be used. There is no button that says start.

To find additional programs you will need to go to the all apps menu

This may be found by right clicking anywhere on the start menu. Move from left to right and have a look through everything (note moving the mouse wheel up and down will scroll left and right respectively). Again this start menu is optimised for touchscreen.

Find an app you are interested in and right click it. It will give you a variety of options.

In this case I am interested in Computer and Control panel. I want to pin Computer to Start so I select pin to start, I done the same with Control Panel.

When I right click the control panel again I can select unpin from start. Several of the items I can also pin to the taskbar.

Pin all the apps you commonly use. Press Windows to return to the Start menu. You will notice that the items you pinned are at the end of your start menu. If you want them elsewhere e.g. I want this near the start. Then hold down the left click one of the items and then just drag it with the mouse into your desired location.

Repeat for all icons until you have it precisely the way you want it.

You may also remove the default icons, simply go to the start menu and right click all the icons you don't want.

This will give you to the option to unpin them from the start. Should you decide you want them later you can retrieve them from the all apps menu.

Several of the larger icons you can make small by right clicking them and selecting smaller. You can return them to larger icons by right clicking them and selecting larger. It doesn't seem to be possible to make all small icons large though.

Desktop

The desktop can be found while on the start menu by pressing the [Windows] key again.

[Windows] and [ d ] will always return you to the desktop.

When you open some applications via the start menu you will notice that some start completely maximised and there is no taskbar others will start as you are use to them starting and you will see the desktop icon at the bottom. The firsts type is called "apps" and the second type we will call "conventional programs".

"Apps" they will start maximised as shown. This includes, messaging, People, Mail, Calender, Photos, Weather, Maps, Music, XBOX Live Games, Camera, News, Sport, Travel, Finance.

"Conventional programs" such as Computer, Control panel, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio etc. will open on the desktop as shown:

Cycling between programs

One subtle thing to note is the difference between the [Windows] and [Tab] key combination and the [Alt] and [Tab] key combination.

[Alt] and [Tab]

This cycles through all your apps and programs that are in use. The start menu isn't included here.

i.e. by holding down [alt] key and tapping the [tab] key you move from left to right icon to icon.

or by holding down [alt] and [shift] keys and tapping [tab] key you move from right to left icon to icon.

[Windows] and [Tab]

This cycles only through your apps, it treats all your programs on the desktop as one entity i.e. the desktop and also goes through the start menus. The current application you are on is not shown. For example if you are on the start menu it isn't shown when you cycle through. Likewise with the desktop or any particular application.

i.e. by holding down the [windows] key and tapping the [tab] key you move from up to down icon to icon.

or by holding down the [windows] and [shift] keys and tapping [tab] key you move from down to up icon to icon.

To close an app press the [Windows] and [tab] keys and right click the apps you want to close and select close.

Note if you right click the start menu instead of an app, you can get an array of common options.

If you right click the desktop, you can close it but it doesn't close or do anything.

Internet Explorer 10 Program of App?

Internet Explorer 10 is kind of schizophrenic if you open it from the start menu it is an app.

i.e. full maximised

Right click anywhere blank on the page you are visiting to get the address bar and tabs

However if you open it from the taskbar it is a conventional program.

Other common shortcut keys

[Windows] and [#]

where # is a number from 1-9 will open the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ..., 9th item on your taskbar respectively.

[Windows] and

Will cycle through the projector settings.

[Windows] and [ e ]

Will open Computer - probably the fastest way of going to the Control Panel or Add/Remove a Program.
