Uninstalling Dell Data Protection Encryption to upgrade windows 10

Hi

Whenever I try to update windows 10 I get an error message telling me to manually uninstall Dell Data Protection Encryption And to contact support to do so.

I don't have the uninstallation program for some reason and don't want to randomly start uninstalling all my dell software on my laptop.

I don't use the encryption at all

Please Help

Hi @Anonymous,

I am going to private message you a download link to our uninstaller utility.  That will remove any Dell Data Security products on your machine, once uninstalled and rebooted you should be able to upgrade Windows 10.

Hello @DGunasekara,

This tool is now available on our public Dell.com support page.  This link will take you to our drivers & download page.  Once there locate Dell Data Security Uninstaller and click Download.  Once the utility is downloaded extract it and run as an administrator.  It will display what Dell Data Security programs are installed and you can then choose what you want to uninstall.

Hello Steve,

This may be true for windows 10. But there is no uninstaller for Windows 7. When I load the page and click on W7 64bit, there is no uninstaller. The W10 version does not work on 7.

Please advise.

I ran the 64bit and the 32bit, both display that the program did not install properly. Since you couldn't help me, I just did a fresh install of windows 10.

Hopefully others don't have to go through what I did.

Hi @DGunasekara,

It looks like the download isn't tagged to display on Windows 7 or WIndows 8.1 but it should run on them without issue.  Ensure you are downloaded the 32-Bit or 64-Bit version that matches your OS.  If it still doesn't work when using the correct bit type please share the error you are receiving.

i'm afraid i'm going through it now. the software has totally hijacked the computer.

i was unable to install drivers that i thought might have the uninstaller in it because they failed to install.

so, where does that leave me.  i'm afraid.

Once you have downloaded the Dell Data Security Uninstaller from our drivers and download page you can extract the contents of the zip file to your local PC.  Once the files are extracted go to that location and run the DataSecurityUninstaller program as an administrator.

The first screen displays.  You can click Next.

On the next screen all applicable Dell Data Security products that are installed will display.

It's important to note that most of the security solutions can be uninstalled without any pre-requisite work being done.  The Encryption solutions however if they were in use MUST BE decrypted prior to being able to be uninstalled. If you need help determining if your machine is encrypted please contact our support teams and we'll be happy to assist.

After you click Next you will have one final confirmation before the removal begins.  Click Remove to uninstall the previously selected products.

The removal program will begin uninstalling.

Once the uninstall finishes you can click Finish. A reboot is recommended but if you are not ready to reboot you can un-check the "reboot machine after clicking finish" checkbox.

This isn't working for me as when I run the uninstaller, it prompts me to install a windows 10 update.  I can't install the update because dell date protection is installed which I need to uninstall, but the uninstaller won't run without the windows update.  Ad nauseum.

I'm stuck in a catch-22.

Hi @gurugi !

Thank you for reaching out! I've added information on gathering the CMGad/Dell Encryption Admin Utilities to your post here: Re: CmgAd.exe utility - Dell Community

We have done similar work with the Dell Data Security Uninstaller, you can also find this under the Drivers and Downloads section for Dell Encryption: Support for Dell Encryption | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US

Here's a direct link to the latest Dell Data Security Uninstaller (10.9.0): https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=704wf

Here's an article that outlines usage and syntax for the utility: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/000125052

Let us know if there's any additional information we can help out with!

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Hi @vhmp_23

The uninstall utility can be found here and directions on usage of it can be found here

The message you're getting about the product code not being found generally indicates that whatever product or uninstall you're attempting to do is not currently installed on your Windows system.

If you're getting messages about being unable to upgrade your Windows 10 OS and its relegated to Dell Encryption the uninstaller should find any reference of it and get it removed for you.  If the uninstaller does not list any Dell Data Security products when you run it then you do not currently have any products installed and DDS shouldn't be preventing your OS from upgrading.
