Yes, this is expected behavior. OMEVV always follows its own workflow to check and manage the host state during firmware updates. Even if the hosts are already in maintenance mode, OMEVV will still perform its checks and steps to ensure the process is consistent.

Hello,

Yes, what you are seeing is expected behavior with Dell OpenManage Enterprise Virtualization (OMEVV) when updating ESXi hosts.

Why Only One Host Passes Pre-Check

  • Even if parallel remediation is enabled in vSphere Lifecycle Manager, OMEVV still respects cluster-level DRS and HA constraints.
  • VMware requires that only one host at a time enters maintenance mode if:
    • Admission control is active
    • There are insufficient resources to evacuate VMs from multiple hosts simultaneously
  • So, OMEVV will queue other hosts until the first completes reboot and exits maintenance mode.

Error: UPDATE_PRE_CHECK FAILED

This occurs because:

  • The host cannot enter maintenance mode while another host is already in maintenance mode.
  • Pre-check fails until resources are freed.

@DELL-Charles R

Sorry, I forgot to mention that all affected Hosts were put manually into maintenance mode before starting the remediation.

Is it still expected behavior?
