Replacement for XPS 8900
Hi all,
Have a favor to ask the forum here. I currently own an XPS8900 that I bought in Feb 2016. The PSU fan started making a huge racked this morning. I was already in the market for a new Desktop, but this new line of Dell Desktops is very confusing. I am planning to buy a replacement. I am not a gamer and not look to build anything. I also dont need Windows Pro OS. Is Tower Plus Model: EBT2250 the right replacement?
If I had to choose options, I would probably prefer to get a Power Supply upgrade and memory upgrade (though I could always put it in myself).
If there is already a review to read, that would helpful.
Thanks in advance.

it is essentially XPS 8970. the new naming scheme is confusing.
https://www.techradar.com/computing/dell-tower-plus-ebt2250
unlike 8900, 8970 has all proprietary parts except cpu and ssd.
easier to get the psu right up front than upgrade later. it does not use standard psu.
a known issue of 8950-60-70 psu is small fan wear out noise inside psu.

I replaced an 8940 with the EBT2250 (basic Core 7 Ultra 265 CPU and GTX4060 GPU). To get a power supply upgrade you'll need to go with a CPU and/or GPU upgrade. I added a tower cooler and two VR heat sinks myself to keep temps down, as well as a second 16GB memory stick. I also transferred the 3 1/2" HDD from the 8940, since the EBT2250 comes with two carriers included.

Thank you for the link @redxps630 really nice article explaining the model. I did not realize that Dell went the Alienware way to proprietary parts. I guess i will upgrade the power supply upfront. Also, I am assuming that the memory is also standard DDR5.

Dell uses oem ram from a few memory makers. non oem ram is hit or miss.

@Richmond Dan
Thank you for the advice. I will definitely consider your suggestions. Do you mind my asking if where did you buy the tower cooler and the heat sinks?

You probably have purchased your new computer by now, but...
I have decided to get a new computer to replace my 2016 XPS8900. My 8900 is working just fine, but i want to get windows 11, and have the option to get a separate graphics card in the future. I went with the QCT1250. I see the ECT1250 is on Amazon this Black Friday. i like that it has a good CPU and is expandable. good luck.
