100 % CPU Utilization

I have 1 gig of memory installed, but when programs load or are being installed, the CPU utilization goes to 100 % and stays there for a long time. Would a memory upgrade to 2 gigs help? Or something else? Bob from Shalimar, Fl

No, memory is not the problem. Your CPU is the limiting factor. When you run out of memory, you will see your HD is very busy, not the CPU. That is because the data will be stored on the HD when the memory is full (that is a simplified version).

"The only thing that is using the cpu in process is the System Idle Process. It seems to be using 90% %+ with 28K of memory."

Hi,
Sorry to interrupt, but Bob, are you aware that the above means that the processor is NOT being used by that amount (%).

In other words, if it says 'System Idle Process 90%' then technically, 90% of your processing power is NOT being is used - IS IDLE.

Look down the very bottom of the 'Task Manager' and it will tell you the total CPU Usage - in % - at that particular time.

Just thought I'd check.
