A drive problems!
My floppy disk drive is acting very strange. I try to access this drive and the light comes on and then it tells me that the disk is not formatted even though I know it is. I have checked in my bios all seems fine. I have switched cables and have made sure the cable is pushed in on both ends. What else can I try. I know the cable is not wrong at all. Any idea's??? BTW I should mention that this is not the first time I have encountered this problem with this A: drive then just all of a sudden it is working fine.
guess it works when it wants too! Gonna add a different A drive and see if thier is still a problem! I installed a different floppy drive from another household computer that I know works yet am getting the same thing disk not formated yet I know this disk is formatted just worked with it today at work!

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
If you try another floppy drive and it does the same thing, then it is not hardware.
Try booting to a Windows boot disk in dos. If it works, then it is a Windows problem.
Try accessing several disks in dos, if it works then you more then likely have a Windows problem.
Also upgrade your bios and reset the bios settings.
If it is a windows problem, check for a virus.
Depending on what version of Windows you are using, try using System Restore to get back to
a point before the problem started.
You can download the latest bios here.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Enter the system setup program as follows:
Turn on (or restart) your system.
When the blue Dell™ logo appears, press (Del).
If you wait too long and the operating system begins to load into memory, let the system complete the load operation, then shut down the system and try again.
To clear NVRAM for all devices and restart the system, perform the following steps:
Enter the system setup program.
Press the right-arrow key to move to the Advanced menu.
Press the down-arrow key to highlight Reset Configuration Data. Then press the plus (+) key to change the setting to Yes (refer to Advanced Screen Menu Options table). Press (F10) to exit the program and restart the system.
Resetting the defaults in the "System Setup Program"
Enter the "System Setup Program"
Once inside, press the (F9) key, the say (YES) to:
"Restore default configuration now?"
When the defaults have been restored, press (F10), and say
(Yes to "Save changes and exit now.)?"

1.Make sure the floppy cable is not in reverse.
If you reverse the connectors on the floppy cable, the drive light will stay on all the time.
2.Try your floppy drive in another computer.
Does the problem follow your floppy drive?
3.Try another "known good" floppy drive in your system.
Does it show the same problem.
*If your floppy drive in another system does not show the problem.
If another floppy drive in your system does show the problem.
It is more then likely the motherboard, and the floppy connector on the motherboard may be bad.
From everything you have already done, I am beginning to think that is the problem.
