always connected?
what exactly does always connected to the internet mean?
does that mean when you turn off computor, completly shut down, but leave the modem on, your still some how connected? or does that mean if you leave your computor on all the time modem, etc, except monitor, thats what means your still connected to the internet? i guess the real question is, if i completely shut down everything (except my modem) am i still vulnerable to port attacks? also when i go to zone alarm web page i ca'nt find free download. just the $1995 package, is there a direct link to the free download for zone-alarm.for home use.
thank you. sincerly, henryhll.

henryhll:
I'm always connected when my computer is on. I'm NOT connected when my computer is off, even though I never shut my cable modem down. When I turn off my computer the connection is broken.
My modem has a "PC" light that is lit when the computer is on.

I will try my best to answer your questions.
You asked:
what exactly does always connected to the internet mean?
First, your connection to the Internet must be via a LAN (Local Area Network), DSL or Cable to be always connected. Assuming you connect via DSL or Cable, always connected means that when you turn your computer on you are connected since a dial up connection is not required. You simply open your browser or access your mail. Your computer does not have to "dial up" to access the Internet.
You then asked:
does that mean when you turn off computor, completly shut down, but leave the modem on, your still some how connected? or does that mean if you leave your computor on all the time modem, etc, except monitor, thats what means your still connected to the internet?
When you shut down, meaning your computer is off, your cable modem is still "on" or your DSL line is still active. But no transmission to the internet occurs since you are shut down. Only when your computer is on, you are always "connected".
You finally asked:
i guess the real question is, if i completely shut down everything (except my modem) am i still vulnerable to port attacks? also when i go to zone alarm web page i ca'nt find free download. just the $1995 package, is there a direct link to the free download for zone-alarm.for home use.
I connect via cable modem and have never experienced any "attack" while the computer was off. You do however need to protect yourself when your computer is on. I use the FREE version of Zone Alarm and like the program very much. Along with a good anti virus program, it is all you need and the the website for it is here:

I hope this helps. Post back if you have any questions. Good luck!
