Boot Problems...

Hello, There seems to be something faulty with either the BIOS or the hard drive (my guesses). I have a Dell Dimension 4600 BIOS A09 and whenever I start up the computer now, it takes FOREVER to load up the BIOS. The little BIOS loading bar loads all the way up, then takes about 5 minutes until it starts loading windows (or booting from CD-ROM or loading into the BIOS setup). This problem has just occurred, and it's really aggravating. Any help please?

Do you have any USB devices that have memory card readers attached to your computer (like a multifunction printer for example)?  If so, try unplugging the USB device and see if the boot time improves.   If it does, then you need to go into the BIOS and set the Legacy USB option to "No Boot".

No, I don't have anything connected to the USB ports.

While the delay is occurring, what do the 4 diagnostic lights on the back of the computer tower show?

That code indicates a possible floppy or hard drive failure.  See the followng:

Yes, I know. I've tried reseating all the data cables and power cables and what not, but to no avail. I do not have a floppy drive. Is there a possibility there is something physically wrong with the hard drive? I hope not, because my warranty ended last month :(.

A couple of things.....  try clearing the NVRAM.  This procedure can be useful in resolving boot up problems.  In your situation the NVRAM maybe corrupted and the system is having a hard time identifying all the installed hardware and thus is causing a delay during boot up process.  The procedure I've listed below will clear the NVRAM on your model:

  • Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
  • Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and  Num Lock.
  • Press ALT+ E then ALT+ F then ALT+ B

Secondly, try running the Dell Diagnostics on your system, especially the hard drives and see what the results are.
