Cannot Display Video Mode" - anyone seen this error before??

just had a client call up. 1 month old Dell Dimension 3000 running xp home.

somebody their end has fiddled with some display settings it seems and each time they boot the pc up they get an error message saying "CANNOT DISPLAY THIS VIDEO MODE".

initially I advised them to try booting into the last known good config - still gave the above error.

next I advised them to press F8 on boot and choose Enable VGA mode.  This boots up into VGA mode and allows them to change the resolution and everything works fine - until they reboot. After rebooting the above error reappears.

any ideas as to what may be causing the system not to save the changes??

OK, some further, more clear facts about our problem:

Dimension 3000 System with 15" Flat Panel monitor

It seems that a refresh rate setting within Windows XP Home has been changed to a setting unsuitable for the monitor to display. Each time the workstation is booted up the following message appears in white on a black background on the monitor:

"CANNOT DISPLAY THIS VIDEO MODE"

The message is a monitor generated error (it seems) rather than a Windows error.

Other than the power button, the other three buttons on their monitor do nothing. They have tried 3 monitors including one 17 flat panel.

They can access windows via Enable VGA mode and change the display settings back to what they are on all of their other workstations however when they reboot the workstation it keeps none of the settings and reverts to the above error message. In addition to this they have also tried booting into the last known good configuration but this had no effect.

We have modified two of our Dimension workstations by changing the refresh rate to 100hz and we too get the same error message as above however on our monitors we are able to press the menu button on the monitor and carry out a factory reset. This solves the problem on our workstations. In addition to this our workstations after about 10 seconds of displaying the above error message actually revert back to a regular working display. Again none of this works for our client on their monitors.

in addition to the above we obviously got them to switch the monitor off for 15 seconds and then switch on again.

further to the above i've just managed to get the same error on my monitor by setting the windows display settings to a refresh rate of 100hz. the error is monitor generated. on my monitor (the same as theirs and they have tried 4 monitors) i can get the monitor menu on screen by pressing the first monitor button. this allows me to do a factory reset. on their monitors they cannot get into this screen.

markjrees,

Have them boot into VGA mode. Go into the device manager and delete all monitors. Restart. The monitor should be found and a generic setting applied.

How do you boot into VGA mode when your monitor wont do anything but "cannot display this video mode"

My problem started when I was staring at a webpage. (facebook) didnt even have my hands on the keys/mouse. monitor flipped off and showed this error. plugged the monitor into my laptop, same error. plugged the monitor into my brand new PC.... same error.

I had the same error message tonight "cannot display this video mode" and was able to resolve the problem.  I have a older dell monitor and a new Lenovo H430 desktop.  I first contacted Lenovo support as the PC is only about a month old and is still under warranty.  They tried several things which did not work and was ready to have me ship the pc to them or send out a tech.  I tried again to boot to safe mode, however this would not work, same message. I then rebooted and kept pressing f12 to get into the Bios settings.  I found a setting under hardware for the video.  It was set to Auto.  The other options were PEG or IGD.  I changed it to IGD and saved the settings.  I then rebooted and I got farther, however Windows would not startup.  I was then able to select a option to do a system restore and restored to a earler date.  I noticed the the last thing installed was DirectX which I think is some type of Video accelerator software.  I expect that one of the online games my son was playing installed this software.  After the system restore completed which took longer then normal, I rebooted and was able to load Windows.  I then rebooted back into the Bios and change the setting back to AUTO and rebooted again and it still worked.  Problem solved.  I hope this can help someone else.  Good Luck :emotion-1:

VGA mode is of use when it's Windows that's trying to switch the monitor to an incompatible mode. If the monitor has failed, then that won't be the case.

If you can see the Dell logo at bootup, start tapping the F8 key to bring up the Windows boot menu. That's where you'll be presented with the VGA mode option.

After trying 3 different computers with the same monitor and getting the same msg on each monitor (da ***?) I was convinced it was the monitor.

(1 was a laptop, not configured for 2 screen. 1 was the desktop that originally started the error which is 12 years old and has hardware problems in it, and the 3rd was my brand new computer that didnt have an OS)

I then stole my friends monitor and it worked fine. Installed windows and plugged in my 'broken' monitor and everything was fine.

had problems getting the os installed because it didnt see the hdd, swapped hdd sata cable to a different socket on mobo and it worked. put it back to original slot and stopped working again. (just as reference to what happened along side my video error screen)
