Cannot reinstall Windows ME

Several months ago we upgraded to Direct X 8.1. Ever since then we have noticed problems installing new hardware and other programs, especially those requiring windows to automatically install or those requiring the use of CDs for the software. The system hangs or stops responding when the installs take place. I have even reinstalled the CD hardware.

We have researched the problem as it has become increasingly worse and the system has begun intermittently hanging up. The research has led us to believe that we need to reinstall windows ME, however, multiple attempts to do so have led us to the system hanging just as the program attempts to install files. This happens even when we prompt from DOS.

We have Norton and have shut down all the Norton programs when we attempt to perform the reinstall. Is it possible I need to uninstall Norton and reinstall after I reinstall ME? I am stumped.

HELP! What can we do?

Steve,
I'd check out Microsoft knowledge base article Q281967 and perform the steps listed before going through the process of formatting your hard drive and doing a clean install of Windows ME. You may find it's not necessary.

While The_Namek's alternative is certainly desireable if you need to back up data prior to any major changes, it's been my experience that any problems involving DX8.x and any upgrades to it are eventually resolved only through a clean install. There are so many horror stories from folks trying to upgrade DX, it astounds me that such an apparently buggy product enjoys such widespread use. Kind of like some versions of Windows, although WinME has turned out to be surprisingly simple to maintain, on the systems I come into contact with where it's installed. Good luck with it, in any event.
