COM Port gone missing!

I'm having trouble (re-)establishing* an Internet connection on my new Dell Dimension 3100. Troubleshooting indicates the modem is working, but suggests the COM Port maybe disabled and tells me to go to the Device Manager, 'Ports (COM & LPT)', and click the relevant one (COM 3 apparently) to enable it.
BUT the Device Manager doesn't have Ports listed.

On another check, I got: AT#CLS = COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED

I did manage to find a list of ports, so they are there, somewhere.

I have not tried connecting a printer yet, otherwise the machine is singing and dancing nicely.

 Any suggestions?

[*I tried Ticali (on machine when it arrived) and then (re-establishing via CD) BTinternet, both dial-up, same problem both times.]

 Thanks

Run modem helper (Start-All Programs-Modem Helper).

If it passes, just try reinstalling the modem driver. If it doesn't work, reseat the modem.

What happened anyway, was it working before at least? If it was, system restore might do the trick. :smileyhappy:

goodluck.

Hi! I just had a very similar issue, except my ports showed up, My message was "com port open" What FINALLY worked was I had the computer uninstall my modem(in the add/remove hardware place) and then had the "New Hardware Wizard" find it again and reinstall it. It worked wonderfully. Now my modem is passing all kinds of tests! I dont know if this will work for you, but once I figured it out,it was VERY simple. I just sat there and pressed "YES" a few times. And I,m spreading the word!
