Computer won't boot
Operating System: Windows 98
Problem Description:
When I boot up it starts to open (intro music plays etc.) but locks up on a
blank background screen. When I Ctl+Alt+Del, the only files open are wmexe
and sometimes encmontr. I have lost my Windows 98 re-install disk, is
there a way I can get a new one or fix the problem without one?
I suspect the problem is due to poor PC practice, out of date virus scan, no firewall etc. but now I can't even get into the system to clean things up and install a proper firewall and anti-virus.

The dreaded "Windows wont boot"..... alas, it is caused by many an issue... too many to even name. It would seem best to "borrow" a friend's Windows 98? It's not exactly fraud seeing as you do own it but simply cannot find it. Good luck to you, sir! talustheelder@hotmail.com.

Have you tried safe mode? If not power system up and press the F8 key repeatedly until you get a Windows 98 Start Menu. Choose safe mode. Safe mode will bypass most all start up programs and also load generic drivers. Once into safe mode check your start menu-programs-starup folder. Delete anything there that may look new. Also run msconfig (winkey R, type msconfig.exe and OK). Go to the startup tab and uncheck most everything except explorer and taskmgr. Then try restarting system.
If this does not work try obtaining an antivirus boot disk that has the most recent virus definitions from someone. Then boot your system from that and run a full scan. This can take an hour or so to do.
