Dell Dimension 4600 - Processor Fan

All,
I had to post this while it was fresh in my memory. I have a Dell Dimension 4600 that is about 18 months old. This system is out of warranty. The system recently developed a soft clicking sound that was intermittent. After searching through the forums I determined that the sound was either coming from the processor fan or the power supply. I removed the side panel and listened to see which device was causing the sound. I determined that the processor fan was the culprit. I found the Dell Spare Parts number and called about a half hour ago. After explaining my situation the Dell person felt that the clicking sound could also be coming from the hard drive. I explained the steps that I took to determine the issue but Dell insisted on transferring me to technical support. After waiting for 15 minutes I decided to hang up. All I wanted to do was buy a new fan. I told Dell that the fan was what I wanted and was willing to take the chance that I could be wrong in my diagnosis. At this point I will go a different route to get a fan. Thanks for allowing me to vent and any comments would be appreciated.

Since you're buying the fan, you shouldn't have to justify your troubleshooting. But you could say the fan is not working at all (little white timesaving lie) to divert the tech troubleshooting and get on with your purchase. You will need a Dell fan or you will get an error message on bootup. I'm not sure if the 4600 system will run long after bypassing the boot message, but you could test that easily enough by disconnecting the fan and trying it (for a brief time).

You can buy an OEM fan for the D-4600 for $9.99 from here.

shesagordie,
Thanks for the information. I was a bit dumbfounded by Dell's response. I mean it shouldn't matter to them what I want to buy.
