Dell precision t7500 dual processor compatibility.
Hi, I have a Precision t7500, currently with A single Xeon e5620 @ 2.4ghz Quad core 12mb cache. With 32gb 2x16gb 10600 sticks of ram. I have just bought a 2nd processor riser, board, heat sink and fan. Should I use one of the sticks of ram in each processor's board? Also, could I use a combination of different CPU's? What would be a recommended improvement along side the Xeon E5620?
Many thanks.
Edit- P.s. Is a fresh installation of windows necessary?

Read pages 17-19 in the manual about installing RAM on the motherboard and riser for dual CPU configurations.
Unfortunately, 32 GB of RAM does not appear to be a supported configuration with dual processors, even though it is compatible with a single CPU setup. So you may have to buy at least 2x8 GB additional RAM to run dual CPUs.
And note RAM must be dual rank (DR) for use with dual CPUs.
Complicated...!

DRAM = Dynamic random access memory
You'll probably have to contact Kingston to find out if it's DR (dual rank).
Crucial.com has dual (and quad) rank 2x8 GB RAM kits for the T7500. And if they recommend a module for a specific PC model, they guarantee it works or they take it back.

I'm aware of that statement in the manual, having recently helped another T7500 user with questions very similar to yours.
If you look at the dual CPU RAM configuration table in the manual, they don't show the larger DIMMS only in the riser (eg, look at the 8 and 128 GB configs). So they violated their own rule. DUH!
I told the other user to install the RAM symmetrically and he says his system is working perfectly. So in your case, I'd put a 16 GB DIMM in slot 1 on both motherboard and riser and 8 GB DIMM in slot 2 on both motherboard and riser.
Worse/worse, you'll just get a RAM config error code and you can just move some modules to other slots.

Ah. Thank you very much. The ram I am currently using is http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR13LR9D4_16HM.pdf
It says it is DRam is that dual rank?

Can I ask how you would populate the DIMM's with the suggestion of getting 2 x 8gb's?
"Dual CPU configurations If configuration contains DIMMs of mixed sizes, populate the larger DIMMs in the dual-processor riser."
So would this be a case of having the 2 x 16's in the riser and 2x 8's in the MB?
Many Thanks.
