Dell Studio One 19 Owners Thread

I recently purchased a Studio One 19 Touchscreen with the Mother's Day Anniversary sale, and I haven't seen a single forum thread dedicated to it.  So here goes a start!

I chose my Studio One 19 over the Apple iMac and the Sony All In One because I wanted a touch screen.

I chose my Studio One 19 over the HP Touchsmart for its performance and price (desktop MB and CPU and its price fully loaded the price was still cheaper than a low end HP Touchsmart!).  The multitouch support was also a nice advantage over HP.

Has anyone received delivery yet?  Any reviews from real world users?

UPDATED 8/1/2010.

KNOWN ISSUES:

1) Noisy oscillating fan. Speeds up and down making a constant whishing sound. SOLUTION: Update to BIOS A08 or later.

2) Random year change to future date e.g. 2075. SOLUTION: Update to BIOS A09 or later.

WINDOWS 7

How I installed a fresh Windows 7 x64 on my Dell Studio One 19

Install Dell A07 BIOS
Clean install Windows 7 Ultimate
Install Dell Nvidia driver (also updates SATA driver), then install OEM Nvidia driver
Install Dell Realtek Audio + dvd eject driver. DO NOT install Dell Touchscreen driver as it does not work with MS Touch Pack
Update Windows
Install Dell Fingertapps Touch Zone.
Install Dell Cozi YouPaint, Dell TouchCam, TouchCam Update

Install MS Touch Pack. Find here - http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?p=179262
    Install MS XNA 3.0
Install MS Bing Virtual Maps 3D
    Install MS Touch Pack
Install Next Window Touch Screen Driver 1.3.2.5. Find here - http://www.nextwindow.com/nextwindow_support/download_confirm.html
Optional - Uninstall MS XNA 3.0, Install MS XNA 3.1
    Optional - Update Nvidia PhysX

All Dell Touch Zone applications and Microsoft Touch Pack applications work.

FYI there are three different touch screen drivers for the Dell 1909
-Windows 7 default
-Dell signed NextWindow
-NextWindow

The Windows 7 default driver and Dell signed NextWindow driver allow you to use all the Dell Touch Zone applications,
but does not work with the MS Touch Pack applications.
The NextWindow driver 1.3.2.5 allows you to use all of the applications in MS Touch Pack and Dell Touch Zone.

I have setup a dual boot with Windows 7 RC, it seems to run well, but I have only had it set up for a few days.

I have not tried any of the Dell apps, other than the app that ejects the BD Optical Drive.  I think it works but can't confirm at the moment.

The Win 7 version I have has the Touch keyboard, but I'm not sure what the "Touch Pack" is.  I haven't played with it that much.

Did you get the Dell Touch Zone to work? I was unable to.  Also, on a fresh install of Windows 7 RC2, 2 drivers were not installed correctly.  Any ideas?

I have also set up a dual boot Windows 7 64 bit and installed the Touch Pack (it is a seperate software, not bundled with win7).  The Touch Zone software does not work, neither does the screen mounted cd/dvd eject button.  I haven't tried the webcam yet, but I don't plan to use it, anyway.  Once the touch pack and multi-touch drivers are installed, win7 does make good use of its native touch screen support.  For example, the onscreen keyboard works great and you can browse photos in the windows picture viewer using flick gestures.  Touch Pack has some cool apps in it, especially the surface globe.  Now if I could just get that eject button to work, I'd feel complete.

As for Touch Zone in Vista, does anyone know a way to remove apps from the scroll wheel?  I'm trying to use this PC as a showroom kiosk and I simply don't need people coming in to play the drums :)

I'd like to know also if there's an upgrade/version that allows a person to totally customize the apps that it makes available.  The settings panel doesn't seem to allow for much in the version that's installed.  It definitely has the potential to be a very useful app!

I was very glad to find this 'thread'. I purchased Studio One 19 Touchscreen along with the rest of you. I have had no problems with the computer. (Thank the good Lord above - I live in Alaska and am sure they would not be able to come to my door to fix anything) Actually was more afraid of switching to Vista, but have found it no problem. The one thing I would like to is be able to do is swap some of the apps on the Dell Touch Zone. I have tried to contact Dell about this, but have not been successful so far in finding someone who knows the program. I have been 'outsourced' to another country every time and when I ask for someone in the USA  I'm generally cut off. The first time - they wanted to get control of my unit so they could check if my programs were compatible????? I didn't think that was at all necessary and told him NO. We were immediately disconnected.

Does ANYONE know how I can remove some of the apps on the Dell Touch Zone and replace with my favorite programs?

  • The bezel/surround around the touchpanel scratches easily. There's a fan inside that spins up/down slightly and repeatedly for a while after the unit is powered on or woken up - really only noticeable when the room is very quiet and goes away after the unit has been on for a while (maybe after 3 to 5 minutes it seems to stabilize)

My fan also spins up/down repeatedly and never stabilizes.  I only notice it when everything is quiet, but its annoying.  What fan is it?  Any idea why?

Based on my history of building computers I'd say it's likely to be the processor fan since this is typically controlled by the motherboard BIOS in conjunction with the temperature sensor for the processor socket however it could also be the chipset fan.  I haven't opened the case for this computer, and won't as long as it has a warranty, so I can't say for sure.  The fan sounds like its located nearer the bottom of the computer to me.  Another thought I had is that it could also be a vent fan since there's vent holes on the bottom as well as the top and there is typically a pretty good breeze coming out the top vent.  Maybe a Dell engineer could help us out here?

According to this review, we can't.

Holding out hope that Windows 7 with the Touch Pack will allow us more flexibility.

I recently purchased a Dell Studio One Desktop.  So far, I'm enjoying it...however I'm having a real issue selecting text ,etc with my mouse.  I am trying to edit documents (select text to either copy, delete, or move text around) and all I get is the hand where my mouse shows on the screen and I can not figure out how to select text.  This is a rather basic feature, so I'm not really sure why I am unable to do so.  It's very important for all of the editing that I do to be able to use this.  Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Try hooking up a regular USB mouse and see what happens.  I suspect there is something wrong with your wireless mouse.  You can also try resync'ing the mouse by hitting the sync button on the back of the computer.

I just received my white Studio One 19.

I have a couple of questions. When i viewed my system on Dell's website, it listed it as Studio One 1909.. Whats the difference between that and the Studio One 19?

I also read on the Dell website that if I purchased my computer that it would be eligible for free windows 7 upgrade when it was available.

I went to the Dell site and entered my information, but it said that my system wasn't eligible. The Dell website lists the Studio One 19 as an eligible machine.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Just got mine yesterday... Love it.... Hopefully Dell will see the demand from users to be able to customize the touch wheel software.....and add/change apps that are in the wheel.

Question:  I saw many references in documentation to a pen... no ability to purchase a stylus pen for the studio 19... would assume it would be a pen with an attachable holder to the frame or a tethered pen..... any one have any information on this or is this a DYI type of accessory???

I have mine in the kitchen and am using it as a family communication center as well as quick internet access...anyone else have thoughts on physical set up and storage for keyboard/mouse.

Thx

I know that when I checked for the free upgrade for my Studio One 19 I was refused because I bought it a week before the official start of the program, they use purchase date not arrival date unfortunately.  Microsoft provided specific start/end dates for the free upgrade program.

I purchased mine July 17, 2009 and it arrived July 28, 2009.  The program started in June, 2009.

@ auntmarching

I hope you decided to stick with it.  I have been very pleased with my repalcement unit.  I chalk the first one up to infantile failure.

Like I said, I have had very good luck with Dell products in the past.  And was very please with the support case I encountered on this failed unit.

mine has this problem as well!! I just got mine today and its really really really really ANNOYING, spinning up and down constantly and never stabilizes, its like the temp sensor can't make up its mind about whether to spin up or down.  Its driving me crazy! Does anyone else have solution to this problem?

Oh and Vista really sucks, I waited this long to finally get a company with vista - worst experience ever...

Otherwise the system is pretty decent, looks real nice! :)
