Dell XPS 8300 & AMD Radeon R9 270x

Hey there Dell Community! This Christmas I received a Radeon R9 270x to replace my AMD Radeon 5700 HD Series.

Unfortunately, after multiple tries I cannot get my new Graphics Card to work. Upon installing the graphics card, the fans spin, the lights turn on, and the everything else works. However, the monitor does not display anything, the keyboard does not turn on, and neither does the mouse.

I have gone through 3 different PSU's now, and none of them have worked. Also, I have tried updating the BIOS, but it seems that the last time DELL updated the BIOS was in November of 2011 even though the computer was released in 2011. I am beginning to get very frustrated as I thought the card was faulty, so I returned it to get a new one. Upon doing so, and installing the new card it still did not work.

I do not quite understand why my computer will not work, and why there have been no recent BIOS updates.

Is there anything I can do to get this graphics card to work? I am very disappointed that I cannot use my computer after a family member spent a large sum of money to get me a christmas gift.

The specifications of my computer are..

Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz

Dell OY2MRG Motherboard

8 GB RAM

Windows 7 Home Premium

The graphics card I received is a Diamond Radeon R9 270x

If someone can help me with some troubleshooting, or give any suggestions in what I can do, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you.

I know this is a year too late for the OP but i updated my bios to A6 and flipped the tiny switch on the side of the card by the power connections and it is working great.  Hope this helps future users.

Dell does not offer bios updates once a particular model is discontinued.  Unfortunately, there has been many issues along the XPS line with video cards and compatibility problems.  If you have installed a good PSU with the required wattage and amps for the card and have the power connectors plugged into the card and have tried different monitor connections, then you may have a compatibility issue.  Did you completely remove the drivers and catalyst software before removing the HD 5700 series card?

I am having the EXACT same problem.  Please let me know if you find a solution.  I have not yet.

I purchased a new motherboard. Upon installing the new motherboard, the graphics card worked.

If you have the same computer, and power supplies and nothing else work, I'm afraid you're going to need to purchase a new motherboard.

Thanks for the info, but I'd much rather try different graphics cards.  I've exchanged the card for another from a different maker (same chipset, though).  If that doesn't work, I'll try another chipset or different brand all together.  I was hoping to find a solution that wouldn't involve playing this hardware mix and match game.  This will be the third card I'm trying so far.  The first was glitchy and the second caused my computer not to POST!

I am interested in knowing which motherboard you purchased. Did you have to also replace your case? I know there is an issue with the power button on the Xps 8300 being propriety. I believe the issue with the video card upgrades are due to Dell not updating the bios. From my understanding the bios will not turn off the integrated graphics when a new graphics card is placed into the pci slot. in effect crippling your system for further upgrades.

Yeah, it's the BIOS that are causing the issue. The motherboard I purchased was an Asrock Z77 Extreme. As far as the case goes, yes, I purchased a new one. Although, I'm not sure if it is mandatory to do so. The main reason I bought a new case was because I did not like the XPS 83000's, and wanted one that wasn't as crammed.

Sorry for the late reply, have been with family all weekend. Good luck with getting your computer fixed!

Apparently not.  I've tried several different cards and the best luck I had was with a 7870, but it was still glitchy.  The other cards I tried wouldn't even allow the computer to POST.  Newer Radeon's don't work.

So Dell stopped supporting the computer just after I bought it, and now I can't find a decent video card to replace the original (which went bad).  Thanks Dell.

So there is no way to solve this problem?

I see... I'm going to buy a new mobo and PSU today and chuck them into the box. Hopefully that will fix the problem. If not, might have to get a new case too.. Lol

Good luck with your new parts. If you're curious as to what I bought, I purchased an EVGA 600w and an Asrock z77 Extreme.

I have the same PC configuration XPS 8300 w/ same mobo core i7-2600 at 3.4 ghz, 8 gb RAM.  I  recently replaced my original HD 5870 with a Saphire R9 270 OC.  It works fine, even with the OEM 450w PSU. Don't know why you're having this issue unless 1) you forgot to plug the 6 pin power connector from PSU to the back of the card (which I did initially and freaked when I got a black screen) or 2) you have a smaller PSU than i received with the "gaming" setup I ordered and it can't handle the higher power card (the 270x draws more power than the 270 OC, but I wouldn't think that should be an issue).  what is you PSU wattage?

You stopped supporting the motherboard a year after I bought the computer and refuse to release BIOS updates that will support newer video cards. Thanks a lot.

I bought my XPS 8300 in Nov 2011.  Less than a year later I wanted to upgrade the graphics card and could not buy the card I wanted because Dell refuses to take care of the Bios update.

Totally unacceptable.  I won't be buying anything from Dell that has insanely ridiculous restrictions like this ever again.  Which means probably not buying a Dell again.
