Desktop stuck in Automatic Repair Loop

Hi all,

I am running a Dell XPS 8700 which was bought in mid 2013. 2 days ago, i was on the net using Google Chrome when i encountered a shockwave error. Upon stopping the shockwave error, my computer froze and all programs became extremely lag. Thereafter, i was stuck at desktop and the computer showed no response to any commands (such as ctrl+alt+delete). Hence, i did a force shut down by holding the power button.

When i rebooted my computer, the usual Dell logo with spinning dial screen appeared. Thereafter, a blue screen indicating "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info and then we will restart for you". This blue screen lasts for a split second and disappears. The next screen then states Preparing Automatic Repair in which nothing happens and this cycle repeats itself. I tried restarting the computer several times but it will not boot into Windows. I did a search online and it stated that the problem i am facing is one termed as "Automatic Repair Loop".

I tried to follow some of the solutions, namely booting from an Installation Disc for the OS i received from Dell previously. However, the problem could not be solved.

Appreciate if any advice could be given on the above matter.

Thanks a lot.

Soon

Set to Legacy Boot so you can F12 boot from DVD and then repair or reinstall.  You may have to delete all partitions and reformat.  Automatic repair is not a panacea and does not always work.  (IMHO it almost never works)

Could also be that the drive is physically bad and needs to be replaced.

Hi SpeedStep,

Thanks for your reply! I actually did that already. Set to Legacy and tried booting from DVD. It was stuck at the Windows Logo and eventually went back into the same loop as well.

Are there ways to verify the source of the problem?

Thanks once again.

Disconnect the hard drive data cable while its off Turn on and press F12.

And when you see it booting from the DVD reconnect the data cable. If this is windows 8 you have options.  If its windows 7 there are ISSUES now getting media now that windows 7 is officially end of sales and microsoft killed the digital river sites.

Hi again,

thanks for your reply. Is the hard drive data cable connected in the CPU? Also, is it something which i have to open up the CPU cover to remove?

Thanks.

You have to open the side cover and remove 1 cable.
