Dimension 5150 processor upgrade

Question

I'm looking to upgrade the processor in my Dell Dimension 5150 and was after some advice if anyone can help please. Current processor is Pentium D820 I have spoken to Dell support and all they say is any of the pentium 5xxx or 6xxx series, which is basically straight out of the manual. I've been looking at the Pentium D960 or the Pentium D965 extreme but wasn't sure if either of these will fit for a start, and if so would they require any upgrade to the cooling that's came as standard with the pentium D820? Any advice will be greatly received thanks

The default heatsink cooling will be fine, in fact the heatsink is a Dell proprietary unit and as far as I know, cannot be upgraded.

You will need to clean and replace the thermal compound on the base of the heatsink, also check that all cooling fins and fan are clean.

The 5150 had two different motherboards installed, it can be either a Dell p/n RD203, or a Dell p/n 0HJ054.

The better version is the 0HJ054 and is the best for upgrading the processor.

The Model p/n is usually listed on a label attached to the motherboard.

The maximum Pentium D that can be installed is the D 945.

Prior to installing the processor, upgaded the BIOS to the latest version A07, with version A05, support for newer processors was added.

I do have the 0hj054 board so I guess I'm in luck.

So basically your saying that the best processor I can get is the D945 which is great to know, would I need to upgrade the cooling at all for this processor?

Also with the bios, do I need to upgrade this before the processor to the A07?
