Dimension 9200 Power Supply Upgrade

Yes you can use any standard ATX supply with a 24 or 20+4 power connector and for your system 6 SATA power connectors.

PC power and cooling are excellent supplies and that is always my first recommendation. Now in your system anything much over 500w would probably be more than enough. Any graphic card that would need a bigger supply would then run into the bottle necking of the CPU and would more than likely be a waste But that just mho.

That part I am not familuar with the best thing would be to open the system and see how the cables are running. Removing the heat sink is not all that of a big deal and will only require reapplying thermal paste.

Thanks for your response.  Do I need to pull the CPU in order to replace the Power Supply?  I read this in a review on Newegg which would be something that would stop me from upgrading.

The routing for the cable to the SATA drives is underneath the CPU heatsink and shield. I needed to remove the CPU heatsink and shield to remove the OEM supply cable, and to install the new supply cable.

Yes they are all the same with the exception of the powersupply requirements. The supplies will either be voltage specific, have a switch or be autosensing.

I also wish to upgrade the PSU and am considering the PC Power &Coolers unit - doesthe above advice also refer to a Dmension 9200 delivered into the United Kingdom?

(i.e. Are all Dimension 9200's essentially the same with the exception of the power supply voltage?)

I've been in the process of trying to replace the power supply in my Dimension 9100. I have a PC Power and Cooling unit which they say is compatible with my PC. The power supply can be found at the following link:

This power supply is different than the original OEM Dell power supply in a few ways. First, the case is slightly shorter by about half an inch. This would mean that there would be a half an inch gap at the rear of the PC casing once the power supply is installed.

The big issue with the PC Power and Cooling power supply is that it does not have the indentations it's casing like the original DELL power supply has. These indentations mate with metal tabs in the Dimension 9100's case.

The metal tabs in my dimension 9100 case protrude a bit and do not allow the power supply to be mounted properly. I really don't see how I can install this power supply without some major computer case surgery.

Has anyone else had a problem installing PC Power and Cooling or other ATX type power supplies?

Just an update on the replacement of my blown power supply on my Dell Dimension 9100. I've managed to install the PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500 for Dell Systems. PC Power and Cooling's website states that this is an OEM replacement. However, it is not an OEM replacement as the PSU is not designed to be an OEM replacement for the original PSU.  I managed to install this PSU and everything functions as it should. However, I thought I would post some details about this power supply for those that are interested.

I've listed some notable differences between the PC Power and Cooling power supply and the OEM Dell unit. I've also posted some pictures below as well.

1. The PC Power and Cooling PSU is 1/2" Shorter than the original DELL OEM unit.
2. The PC Power and Cooling PSU is a generic ATX power supply. The wiring harness is not the same as the OEM Dell unit. There are more wires, not all of them have the same length (some are shorter, some are longer). One of the SATA hard drive power cables is not long enough to be routed in through the traditional way (using clips mounted to the case routed under the CPU cooler).
3. The PC Power and Cooling PSU comes with 6 SATA power connectors. Two of them are too short to reach your hard drives (on the Dimension 9100). The other two can reach the hard drives but you have to be extra careful to route the power cables properly because when you close the case, the metal on the case can rub against the wire (and take some of the insulation off). The other SATA connectors seem to be useless on the Dimension 9100 as they are straight SATA connectors (not the 90 degree SATA connectors that are required on the Dimension 9100 as the hard drives are mounted sideways; there is no clearance for a straight SATA connector).
4. The PC Power and Cooling PSU does not have slots or indentations that mate with the Dimension 9100 computer case (see pictures below). This makes it difficult to install the power supply as the case tabs get in the way. I managed to install the power supply, however it took a lot of wrestling to get it done. And the replacement PSU does not sit perfectly straight (because the case tabs are in the way).
5. The PC Power and Cooling Power Supply does not have a cable clip that allows you to route your cables neatly in the case. However, I managed to install some 3rd party clips to get around this problem.
6. So far the replacement power supply does seem a bit quieter than the OEM Dell PSU, however, I haven't had a chance to test it at length yet.

Can those on this forum advise if the PS for a Dell Dim 9100 is compatible with a Dell Dimension 9200 ? (In error I ordered a 9100 compatible one for a 9200 computer with a suspect PS)
