Dimension E510 Processor
I see that Dell is offering the Intel D 900 series processors to the E510 BTO Option. My system is the E510, DM051. Should I assume that the current BIOS A05 will support the new processors in my machine? Anyone tried to upgrade from the D820?

Where did you see the text saying that the BIOS splash showed VIIV support where applicable? I didn't see that anywhere.
Also, from their messages, it appears that the 8xx-series processors were able to somewhat work (but some still get a 'hit f1 to continue' at bootup.)
I haven't seen a case yet where someone has a working 9xx series processor running in an e510.
Any more information would be appreciated as always... I'm doing what I can today to see what my options are.
Thanks for the reply.

First I'd like to say that dell has never supported cpu upgrades so expecting level one techs to give you meaningful help on the issue is a huge waste of your time.
Secondly, and I truely hesitate to mention this, but you can try flashing to a non-dell bios. There have been a few cases where this has turned out well but many where it has not. If you can't live with the machine as is, it's a path worth researching.

I suppose one thing I could do is to flash to A04 and see if the PC will support it, then. The 950 processor has been out long enough to be supported by a BIOS that was created in January/Feb.

What really threw me for the loop was the processor incompatibility, though. I can live without RAID0...but I am so incredibly unhappy that their motherboard doesn't even have the basic Intel reference level of support, I'm going to seriously rethink the strategy of my company's use of Dell laptops and desktops. HP/Compaq has been courting us quite a bit lately, and they don't seem to deviate much from the Intel reference BIOSs.

Yes though the 8XX does not have ViiV where as the 9XX does so as the A04/5 BIOS specs mention ViiV it must support 9XX processors.

Ok, My machine was delivered in Feb and came with A02 BIOS, I skipped A04 and have loaded A05.
Now both A04 and A05 BIOS specs state: "Add Intel VIIV badge to splash screen when required" "Add support for newer processors" "Improve fan tables for newer processors" etc.
Mine came with a 6XX processor, the only newer processors are the 8XX and 9XX dual cores, therefore the later BIOS must support the dual core processors.
Regards.

My current processor is a Pentium 4 640.
It's 90nm fab, 1.2/1.4v at 84 Watts.
The Pentium D 820 is a 90nm fab, 1.2/1.4v at 95 Watts.
The Pentium D 950 is a 65nm fab, 1.2/1.337v at 130 Watts.
So...I've seen some messages with folks having 8xx series processors running in e510s....and I've seen a message with someone saying they've gotten a 9xx series to work...
Is this a ymmv kind of thing where some motherboards have different tolerances than others, or is this a case of different board revisions?
My board has the 4 inducers as previously mentioned. Is the board with 3 inducers better?
If not anything else, at least the search for a definitive answer is kind of fun...
