E228WFP Poor Display

Purchased XPS420 with ATI HD2600 XT Video and Dell 22" Monitor E228WFP.  From the very 1st time I turned on my XPS the Monitor display was VERY Bright...colors washed out.  The display looked like a TV when you turn the Brightness control up high.  Working with dell they felt the Monitor was defective and ordered a New one.  I waited 30 days before the new Monitor was shipped.  The new Monitor was as bad as the original monitor.  I tried a neighbors 22" Samsung, it looks as bad.  Dell feels it is now the ATI XT2600HD Video Card....ATI says it is not...if the card was defective I would see lines in the Display, I don't.  I have tried to adjust the Brightness and Contrast setting on the Monitor....its set at factory defaults...75...but I either got a dark display, a display that lacks Contrast....and or a display that simply out was not Vivid. I expected a 1st class Display given I paid extra for the Video card and monitor.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?  If so, what has been done?  Was it corrected and how?

Well, hmmm... If you plugged in another make of LCD (the Samsung) and it's equally bad, then regardless of what ATI's saying, it sounds like the video card. In fact, I can't imagine that one could arrive at any other conclusion.

Has Dell offered to replace the video card? I can't imagine that they would hesitate to do so, since that's so obviously the issue...

I don't recall if you tried this but have you tried these monitors on another system and if so do they behave the same way???

weird as everthing else....
I would still try the other system test just to see what happens...

Another question have you updated or reinstalled the video drivers?

That is correct....I lowered the Gamma settings in the catalyst Center almost to the full minus setting.  But I have never seen a PC Bootup where at 1st the Display is real bright....and then suddenly it darkens (which is when the  Catalyst Center).....loads.  And, what has surprised me is that the dell techs I have spoken with none have mentioned the ATI Settings...and neither did ATI when I spoke to them.  Of the past 4 Dell PC's I have owed, those Monitors always loaded just fine with no required Tweaking in the Video Card Software.

Yes they did.......but I told them I wanted to push back at ATI again now that 3 Monitors show the same poor Display.  I personaly feel the problem is a poor 'Marriage" between the Video Card and the Dell Monitor and may not be corrected by a New card.

I seem to rember that the ATI cards unless you tweek the catalsy settings did overdrive the brightness...seems i always had to lower the gamma from the default setting.
However I would push for a new card and see it that truly is your issue..

No, didn't try the 22" on a different PC.....problem is, the only other PC would be a VGA Connection which puts another variable in the testing and may not provide accurate results.  This will throw you, with dell's direction I did connect a 17" LCD to my XPS .....it was connected using the DVI to VGA adaptor....and the Display was fine.  Now how does that figure if all points as the card being the problem?

So, here's what we have, I think:

ATI + Dell 22" LCD via DVI: bad image
ATI + Dell 22" LCD (replacement) via DVI: bad image
ATI + Samsung 22" LCD via DVI: bad image
ATI + 17" LCD (unknown vendor) via DVI-VGA connection: good image

Sounds like the ATI card is having problems with a digital-digital connection regardless of which monitor is connected, while it's okay with an analog signal. I'm still betting that it's the ATI, whether it's a hardware or software problem.

Yes, installed the latest driver from the Dell site...but when doing so it was not to correct the Display, it was done to see if it would create a Mouse pointer problem......my Mouse would not align with Hotspots.  Using MSPaint...draw..the pencil point was 1/4" from the line.  After the updated ATI driver was installed the mouse problem was fixed, but if the install impacted the Display, it might have made it even brighter.

Perhaps you might be able to shed some light on another issue with the Dell LCD Monitor.  I have noticed a shadow of white light coming from the edges of the monitor.....  Is this simply a normal Characteriestic of Flat Panel Montitors....or indicative of a problem? It is only noticable when the display is Black....or a dark color.

A setting......I don't recall seeing it in the Monitors menu.  Where is that setting and is it adjustable.  Your Clouding description is right on.  I see it when my Screen saver comes on....it 95% balck......or when watching a movie in the 16:9 ratio

That's light leakage, and it's not unusual for an LCD panel (although, not preferable). I have two 21" LCD's on my desk right now (Sceptre's, a bit of an off-brand, I believe), and they both have some leakage, although they're both nice, bright displays. I also have an Acer notebook with A LOT of leakage, and it definitely has an impact on the quality of the display.

that leakage is a function of the backlight setting and it does plauge LCDs'...in some LCD's its called Clouding and will only show up on a pure no signal black screen.
