Enter BIOS
I have a new XPS 8500 and have some strange behavior with restart and power on. When I turn on the PC I see nothing on the Display until Windows 8 Lock screen. I never see the Dell Logo start. I cannot figure out how to get to the Bios screen. I have tried to hit F2 as soon as I push the power button, and all that does is freeze the system without turning on. I see only the power button lit. I then have to power off with a hold of the power button.
If I install or update something that ask me to restart, or if I select restart, the PC shuts down and then goes to sleep. It does not restart. Again I have to force power off and then power on to get my system to turn back on.
How do I get to the Bios, and once there what options should I look for to fix the restart issue?

Yes this solved the restart problem. But I still cannot enter Bios at start up with "F2".

Hi Fife65th,
Generally, this might happen if you have connected the monitor via USB connection. If possible, try connecting the computer to an alternate monitor using a VGA or DVI cable and check if the issue persists.
Please share the system setup along with model number of monitor and the type of connection being used between monitor and computer. Will take it forward from there.

Hi Fife65th,
You may try updating the BIOS to the latest version from the link : http://dell.to/Z59zOo and check if it fixes the issues.
Note : Before updating the BIOS, please remove any external peripherals (flash drives, printer, external hard drives, etc) connected to the computer and save/close all the programs and connect your computer to a surge protector (if available) to avoid any unexpected shut down.
If the issue persists, please share the exact model number of the monitor you are using with the system and type of connection between the system and monitor. This will help us in diagnosing the issue further.
Hope this helps. Please reply with the findings.

Try tapping the F2 key as soon as you reboot instead of holding it down. That might prevent it from freezing.

I have a similiar issue the 'Dell' page of my 8500, except I'm on win 7, and, unlike the OP, while I cannot always see the Dell logo (and sometimes i do see it - have no idea why), i'm always able to enter the bios by quickly pressing the f2 button about 1 second after power on.
In either case - Dell logo or not - I find you have to be extremely fast to get into the BIOS.

Hi seansean,
Please share the model number of monitor being used with desktop system along with the type of cable (VGA/DVI/HDMI/USB) being used to connect the monitor to system. Will take it further from there.

Hi - I'm using an LG Flatiron W2453V monitor, connected via HDMI.

Hi seansean,
You may follow the steps below to enable Intel Multi Display option in BIOS :
If the issue persists, try connecting the monitor with a different cable i.e. DVI or VGA and see if it helps.
Please reply with the findings. I would be glad to help you.

Thank you. I have an XPS 8500. I had connected both my ViewSonic HD display via DVI and my Vizio HD TV via HDMI. When I restarted and again didn't see anything on my ViewSonic Display I switched my TV to HDMI 2 and there was the Dell Bios logo. It is stuck and not progressing (No boot). But at least I know why I could not interrupt the Bios start up. I unplugged the HDMI cable from the back of the TV and restarted again. I was able to use F2 to get into the Bios. Then after allowing the boot to finish, I tried a 'restart'. It worked fine. So my problem is that when an HDMI Monitor is connected I cannot interrupt the Bios and I cannot do a restart. But I now have a legitimate work around. Thank you.

Hi Fife65th,
It appears that you are able to view the Dell logo and BIOS screen when connected via DVI cable. I would suggest you to disconnect the DVI cable from system and connect system and TV with HDMI cable and see if the issue persists.
If, you are not able to see the Dell logo only with HDMI cable, try following the steps shared above to enable Intel Multi Display option and see if it helps. Ensure that you select the correct input source in TV before powering on the computer.
Also, please share which HDMI port (onboard/additional video card) you are using for connecting the TV.
Please reply with the findings. I would be glad to help you.
