Error on boot up - This computer has an add in graphics card....

Hi

Here the full error ->

This computer has an add in graphics card, but the monitor cable is plugged into the integrated video connector. To attach the monitor cable to the add-in graphics card:
1. Shut down the computer
2. Plug the monitor cable into the add-in graphics card connector. This may require a video adapter or video adapter cable.
3. Turn on the computer

I get this error on boot of my new DELL XPS 8500. I am not sure of the concepr of add-in graphics card and non-add-in. Somebody who knows please explain? Regardless of which of the two VGA slots I use I still get the error message. I can, however.,plug the VGA into (what i believe) the DVI adaptor and it starts up.

The issue is I want to use dual screens (I have two Samsung 23" monitors - any suggestions on the best workaround ?

Thanks

The photo (see my post above) from the XPS 8500 e-doc shows a VGA port on the video card,  though I don't know what card is actually installed in the systen that was photographed.
* It is the GeForce GT620 (VGA/HDMI/DVI-I Dual-Link).

Are you saying none of the AMD cards Dell is supplying with this system has a VGA port?
* That is correct.
Radeon HD7570 (HDMI/DVI-I Dual-Link) or (DP/DVI-I Dual-Link)
Radeon HD7770 (DP/HDMI/DVI-I Dual-Link)
Radeon HD7870 (Mini-DP/Mini-DP/HDMI/DVI-I Dual-Link)

And are you saying the on-board VGA port works even when the PCI-e video card is installed? That's different behavior from prior Dell systems.
* It appears that way. I have to see it to believe it.

Do all DVI monitors support Dual-Link? If the video card is DVI Dual-Link and the monitor is only DVI Single-Link, will that work?
* That I do not know.

So, the added video card is near the bottom of the tower. So each monitor must be plugged into the ports on the bottom add in video card. Now, tell us what ports are on the add in video card. What color are they?

Thanks Chris.

The GT620 video isn't offered in the XPS8500, so that photo should be replaced with something relevant. None of the available video cards, according to your response, has a VGA port so the current photo wil only confuse people. Certainly confused me!  :emotion-7:

Would be helpful if both members who posted here provide details of all available video ports in their system, and include the exact video card model number.

It's my impression the OP has used the on-board VGA port even with the add-in video card installed, unless I'm missing something here...

The sales site may not offer it, but the Nvidia video card is on the XPS 8500 parts list -

0NTVR AMD Radeon HD7570
* OPGA9 DVI-I Dual Link/Display Port
* M209a DVI-I Dual Link/HDMI
* ML209a DVI-I Dual Link/HDMI (Low profile)

8TY6T AMD Radeon HD7770 DVI-I Dual Link/HDMI/Display Port

67V2J Nvidia GeForce GT620
* M117N DVI-I Dual Link/HDMI/VGA
* ML117N DVI-I Dual Link/HDMI

Hi Chris,

I was about to purchase the 8500 but the only cards listed are the Radeon 7770 and the 7870.    I've read all these posts about dual monitors on the 8500 and I need to be clear on whether or not the 7870 support dual monitors BY ITSELF, not by using the integrated Intel VGA connection (covered up?).   I need dual 1920x1200.   I already have a Dell 24" and I will be ordering a second with this purchase.

Also, since you say the GeForce GT620 is on the parts list, does that mean there is some way to get it on my order despite what the website says?   Do you have to call to order this option?    (That's assuming the GT620 also supports dual output for 2 monitors)

Thanks for any info.

You cannot use the integrated video and a separate video card at the same time.

Am I reading the above correctly?

I've got the AMD Radeon HD 7570 1GB GDDR5

I read it as I should be able to have 3 monitors going at once.  2 on the Radeon and 1 on the Integrated graphics.

Also, looking at this...

NOTE: When a discrete video card is installed on a computer that also has an integrated video card, the integrated video card is disabled. Use the system setup program to manually enable the integrated video card.

Taken from...http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xlob/mmd/en/about_videocards.htm

Seems to confirm it.  Has anyone tried yet?

You cannot use the integrated video and a separate video card at the same time.

That doesn't seem to be true any longer. You just have to enable Intel Multi Monitor Support in BIOS setup and that allows the integrated VGA port to work along  side an add-in PCIe x16 video card in Win 7.

I'm here to tell you that it actually works. I've got a new Dell 8500 with the 7570 video card (1 - HDMI / 1 - DVI).

Initially, I couldn't get it to work. After enabling the functionality in the BIOS, if I plugged in the monitor into the integrated VGA, it disabled the 7570, and vice-versa. I then went and updated the drivers for the integrated graphics (7570 was up to date) and it worked like a charm.

Both monitors look great with no discernible difference in PQ.

@Jzachey - Are you sure the volume controls for the HDMI port are set correctly on the PC? I don't have a HDMI port on any of my PCs, but search around in the Audio control panel looking to see if something is set to off or mute.

OK, just found this on another forum:

Click Start,>Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound and click on "Hardware and Sound", Third option down is "Sound". Right underneath "Sound" it says "Manage Audio Devices". Click that and then click where it says "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" When that highlights, go to the bottom and click "Set Default" then click "OK"

Sounds (no pun intended!) exactly like what I was trying to say, though I didn't know the links to the settings in Windows! :emotion-5:

Hope this fixes the problem for you.

e.r.a.: Thanks so much for the graphics!  I have an XPS 8500 desktop with AMD Radeon HD 7770 2GB GDDR5 paired with the Dell S2330MX monitor.  I was using the VGA to VGA connection and having no trouble but wanted HDMI – and having no luck.  I was getting the error message regarding my display device on boot up when connecting with the VGA/HDMI adapter from the monitor to the HDMI port on the XPS (unknowingly connecting it to the Integrated Graphics HDMI port at the top).

Desperately wanted to play blu ray movies, but it was a no go with VGA, of course.

I was using the HDMI port labeled in the upper section of the XPS (integrated graphics controller).  Not the one (which is not labeled “HDMI”) in the slot for the AMD graphics card (where you’ve labeled it HD 7570).

Finally realized after looking at your illustration that just beside the VGA port is another HDMI port… for the AMD Graphics Card!   Voila! It now works beautifully.  Feel like an idiot for not even seeing that 2nd HDMI port, but since it’s not labeled…

Dell Tech wasn’t able to help.  It’s difficult on the phone anyway.  Thanks so much for detailing the ports and explaining the function of each.  You solved my problem!

Thank you!

Hi there, and sorry for dragging up an old thread, hope you can help a simpleton!

I bought a XPS8500 in the UK, checked it on a friends system, returned to my home and when I plugged it all in I got (yes you guessed it):

"PC has add in Graphics card but monitor plugged into integrated video connector.  Plug the monitor cable into the add in card connector (this may require a video adaptor or video adaptor cable supplied with the desktop)"

Well I never received an adaptor, and I have tried the Dell help system and failed. I ovbiously tried to connect with my VGA lead :-)

As I'm in Spain I need to ensure I get the right one .... can anyone please tell me which adaptor I need for this to link to my LG Monitor?  I'd be most grateful for your help guys

Thanks
