Error on boot up - This computer has an add in graphics card....

Hi

Here the full error ->

This computer has an add in graphics card, but the monitor cable is plugged into the integrated video connector. To attach the monitor cable to the add-in graphics card:
1. Shut down the computer
2. Plug the monitor cable into the add-in graphics card connector. This may require a video adapter or video adapter cable.
3. Turn on the computer

I get this error on boot of my new DELL XPS 8500. I am not sure of the concepr of add-in graphics card and non-add-in. Somebody who knows please explain? Regardless of which of the two VGA slots I use I still get the error message. I can, however.,plug the VGA into (what i believe) the DVI adaptor and it starts up.

The issue is I want to use dual screens (I have two Samsung 23" monitors - any suggestions on the best workaround ?

Thanks

Thanks so much for that, Its difficult to tell .... are there different DVI connections on different dell desktops.  Trouble is I have to order it from UK for delivery to Spain and it can take weeks :-) I just want to make sure its right :-)

There are DVI-i and DVI-d ports, and both come in "single link" or "dual link" flavors. (Yes, it's way too complicated!) So you need to know what outputs the video card has and what inputs your monitor has.

A DVI-i output can be connected to a either a DVI input on a monitor or to a VGA input on a monitor with an inexpensive DVI>VGA adaptor. A DVI-d output will only work with a DVI input on a monitor.

If you know that it worked at your friend's place, get the exact same cable he/she has. :emotion-5:

Cool, thanks Ron.  Mate is in Belfast at the moment (God help him), so I was trying to fix it quickly but I have something to go on thanks to you both :-)

I am getting the same error on my Dell Demensions c521. The only connections I have are a VGA and a DMS-59 plug. How do I solve this?

That's an older system, so is this something new?

Do you have an add-in video card or only onboard graphics?

Did you recently add new hardware or software, or update to a newer version of Windows? (What version are you using?)

Sorry for the delay. This machine is an older one, it runs Windows Vista.  I'm not sure if anything has been added to it but I see the VGA port which is hooked up now, and also another port.  When I researched it online it turns out to be a DMS-59 port which I have no cable for.

The machine was given to me because it is getting the blue screen of death and they thought I could fix it, but I can't get past this error screen.

Power off, unplug and press/hold power button for ~15 sec. Open case and remove add-in video card, assuming it has one.

Then remove motherboard battery and press/hold power button for ~30 sec. Reinstall the battery (right-side-up!) and see if it boots with monitor connected to onboard VGA.

Find my.Other post and it explains your problem basically just unplug the blue cord that runs from the monitor to the back of the tower turn computer off first , understand that you have two cords running from the monitor to the tower leave the double headed graphic card cord attached and unplug the other cord that runs from themonitor to the tower this should solve your problem, I hope I made it as simple and easy as I can ,enjoy life.

Unplug one of the cords going to your monitor ( most likely the blue cord) you don't need it if you have the graphic card double cord this should allow you to enjoy your computer , understand that you have two separate cords running from your monitor to the tower leave the double adapter graphic card cord on and remove the other cord from the tower it should work I had the same problem with my  dell optiplex 780.

Post a new question instead of adding to an old post. Include your model computer, operating system and an explanation of the problem. Reseating anything on a computer means removing and replacing the card or chips on the motherboard only if you are comfortable working inside the computer and follow all the safety instructions. But that might not solve your problem and might not be needed at all. We don't know without an explanation of the problem.
