How to Begin Rebuilding a Desktop

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 (DXC061) desktop that I would like to upgrade. Here are the specs:

--Processor: Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz
--Memory: 3 GB RAM
--Op Sys: WIN 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
--Graphics: Intel G965 Chipset Family

I'd like to purchase a faster processor and most of all, a new HD graphics card. (My graphics performance rating is low). Dell recommended a Radeon x1300 card which I discovered is an ATI legacy product (and not supported by WIN 7 without a lot of headaches).

Could someone advise on how to begin rebuilding my desktop for these and any other recommended upgrades, i.e., HD, power supply, etc.?

BTW, my processor is soldered onto the motherboard; does this mean that I would have to purchase a new motherboard for a new processor, or can I add another processor to the current one? Or can I actually remove and replace soldered hardware???

Thanks in advance from someone "new" who is eager to recycle and upgrade versus buy a new comp...

Kim

ok...where do I start? ...just kidding.

I would start off with a new CPU and a motherboard. Top choices for Intel is the i7 series, and Phenom X2 for AMD.

AMD is cheaper than Intel.

I got an OEM GTS 240 from nVidia in my recent Dell Studio purchase. That card works really well with my i7. I'd suggest buy at least a GTX 260 as the GTS 240 is for OEM only. IF you want my GTS 240, you can contact me at my blog as johnr at www.whatsyourpc.com . I will be updating to a different card in the next few months. SO, you can have mine for dirt cheap.

The power supply unit will be next. To future proof, 600W to 800W will be good for future card upgrades. Check out my blog at my website, and I have proven that the latest games like Batman Arkum Asylum, and the legendary Crysis all play good enough.

Thank you, will do! I'll start researching the upgrade in the next couple of days. Best, Kim
