How To Disable (HT) Hyper-Threading?

My specs -

8250

3.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT Technology
1.50 GB of RAM
Windows XP Professional

Could someone please explain a step-by-step guide to how to turn off HT? I'm not sure if you turn off HT in the BIOS or by going to my computer/hardware/device manager/computer or processors. Someone had told me to change from multiprocessor to "standard pc" or something like change cpu driver to default processor or something instead of multiprocesser. I don't know, could someone please help with a guide to how exactly turn off HT in all ways. Thank you very much.

The BIOS should have a disable feature for HT.

Why do you want to disable HT?  HT is a major advance in CPU processing.

I did just turn off HT in the BIOS. I still have my problem. Is there anything else like this to do?

HT has to be switched both in the bios and the control panel acpi. It's all documented in the FAQS!!!!

Windows XP should then automatically switch into single-CPU mode.

What is the exact problem you're having?

someone said to do this...

update drivers, take out ur motherboard cd and restore back to "standard pc"

Would that work?

I looked at the FAQs... Maybe you could post the link exactly where? Thank you

I'm not sure if that would work or not, but it seems like way too much work.  I found the link detailing how to go back to a single proc machine for you.  Try this instead: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_other&message.id=129637  It's the 9th question down.

That which applys from the faq is as follows:
If you turn off Hyper Threading support, the WindowsXP HAL will not update itself automaticaly.
You must change the WindowsXP HAL in the device manager to accomidate the change.
-Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then click System.
-Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
-Double-click to expand the Computer branch. Note the type of support that you currently have.
-Double-click the computer type that is listed under the Computer branch, click the Drivers tab, click Update Driver, and then click Next.
-Click Display a list of known drivers for this device, and then click Show all hardware of this device class.
-Choose "ACPI UniProc" and click Next.
-Then click Finish and reboot the system.

So far I've turned HT off in the BIOS.

I saw that FAQ, but when I get to this step -Double-click the computer type that is listed under the Computer branch, click the Drivers tab, click Update Driver, and then click Next. I click update driver, then 'Hardware Update Wizard' window pops up, "This wizard helps you install software for: ACPI Multiprocessor PC"

"If your hardware came with an installation CD or floppy disk, insert it now."

"What do you want the wizard to do?"

and then theres 2 options to pick from..

"Install the software automatically (Rec)"

"Install from a list or specific location (Adv)"

Click next to continue

Now if I go with

"Install the software automatically (Rec)" and click next it comes up with cannot continue the hardware update wizard. The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed. So I just click finish..I dont know what to do.. why is it so hard to completely disable/turn off this HT...!?
