Hyper-Threading ENABLED, BIOS version A05 - INTEL utility reports no HT support??
Ok, I have a new-out of the box Dell Optiplex GX620 - BIOS rev A05. Hyper Threading is enabled. The INTEL hyperthread check utility is reporting that my system is NOT using HyperThreading - although my processor supports it.
Why would dell mis-represent their products as HyperThread capable - when it is not possible to get it to operate with HyperThreading in their BIOS?
GRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

It depends on which CPU you bought. You can see from this list that not all the CPUs have HT:
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 521 with HT (2.8GHz, 1M, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium D Processor 840 (3.2GHz,DC,2X1M,800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium D Processor 830 (3GHz,DC,2X1M,800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium D Processor 820 (2.8GHz,DC,2X1M,800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 670 with HT (3.8GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 650 with HT (3.4GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 640 with HT (3.2GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 with HT (3GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 521 with HT (2.8GHz, 1M, 800MHz FSB)

The actual utility output (sic from intel utility) follows:

Thank you for your response - it is most appreciated.
Sorry, I think I was not very clear in my first post.
The CPU is definatly Hyper Threaded capable. When I go into my Dell BIOS - it shows that hyper threading is in fact ENABLED.
The problem is this - I used the utility from INTEL to check weather my OS is utalizing the Hyper Threading - and it says there is a BIOS problem preventing Hyper Threading from working.
So again, my questoin is - why - when a HT CPU is purchased and installed in my Dell Optiplex GX620 - why windows cannot use it due to a BIOS issue.
I have installed A05 - I believe is the most currrent Dell BIOS. It seems if one wishes to use HT - they should not buy the Dell optiplex GX620 - cause it doesnt really work due to this BIOS thing.
Did that help any?

Thank you again for your attention.
I understand your post. I agree my CPU is hyper threaded.
I dont understand why the INTEL utility is reporting an issue with the BIOS - thereby my windows does not utalize the HT functionality in the chip.
What is the problem with the A05 BIOS that renders the HT cpu virtually useless? It seems I need to reccomned to management not to buy the Optiplex gx620 - due to the fact the BIOS is preventing the HT to be fully utalized thereby wasting the money that is spent on the HT machines - and opt for a NON-HT machine.
You all have posed 3 times that my cpu is hyperthreaded - I alredy know that.
I also know the Dell Optiplex GX620 FAILS the INTEL verification of HT functionality - specifically due to BIOS problems.
This is my question - why and what is being done to fix it?

If Hyper-Threading is turned ON in the bios, then the Device Manager, Performance Monitor and Task Manager will report 2 processors on a single CPU system. What do yours report?

Now were finally getting there.
Windows is reporting ONE via the task manager performance window.
The BIOS reports Hyper Threading ENABLED = YES.
This is why I am posting to this board - something is awry on the Optiplex GX620 with BIOS A03 AND A05.
Problem originally noticed with BIOS A03 - I Upgraded to A05 - problem still exists.

First off this is NOT a dell problem.
Second its NOT DELL SOFTWARE.
The following operating systems are not recommended for use with Hyper-Threading Technology. If you are using one of the following operating systems, it is advised that you should disable Hyper-Threading Technology in the system BIOS Setup program:
Microsoft Windows 2000 (all versions)
Microsoft Windows NT* 4.0
Microsoft Windows Me
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 SE
If you install XP and HT is turned off then you need to replace the HAL in the device manager.
That means enable bios. Then Install XP. Then change the MPS Uniprocessor PC to ACPI Multiprocessor PC driver in the Device manager. If you get this wrong you are hozed like totally fer shure. Then when you run it will show HT enabled and the test will work. I did this by booting the XPSP2 CD and then choosing Install XP. The cd then finds previous versions of XP and then says REPAIR as an option. Not the first one the Second time it says it can Repair not the automated self repair the first time round. The Bios test did not work until I had ACPI Multiprocessor PC as the driver.
