Identifying Com Ports

I am not sure this is the right place for this question but here goes.  Software I installed on my Dell Dimension C521 with XP Service Pack 3 is to connect my arranger module to my computer so I can download midi files off of the arranger module's hard drive.  The module is connected with a serial cable with a serial to USB connector attached since the C521 doesn't have the old serial type serial port connector. BUT the software won't work.  It shows no available Com ports (Com1 - Com4 listed as occupied, but not by what)  So my question is, how does one identify these 4 ports and what is using them so I can use my arranger module.  When the cable from the module is plugged into one of the computer's USB ports, the computer recognizes that SOMETHING was connected, but lists as an unrecognized device.

Go the hardware manufacturer's site to see if there's an update to their software and/or drivers that allows it to recognize when the device is connected via USB.

Unfortunately, just because you can connect a serial>USB connector to a cable, doesn't guarantee that the device will work correctly.

You may end up having to buy a PCI card with a serial port and installing that in the C521, assuiming you have an available (empty) PCI slot. Look at places like newegg.com etc. for PCI serial port cards. They  costs maybe $10-$20, and might save you a lot of grief. ;)

Hi,

Thanks for the answer.  I will contact the tech for the arranger module and check with him.  I'll have to check and see if I have an empty PCI slot, and if so, I will pick up a PCI card with serial port if the arranger tech can't help.  Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
