IEEE 1394 Problem

Question

I've had a Dell Dimension XPS for a couple years now, to which I've made no hardware upgrades of any kind. The Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 that came with it has an IEEE 1394 port on it. When I plug in my Canon ZR85 digital video camera with a firewire, my computer does not recognize it. I have been on the phone with Dell tech support, Creative tech support, and Canon tech support with no help. There are no hardware conflicts, no 'exlamation points' in the Device Manager. No matter what I do, my computer absolutely will not recognize the camera through the firewire. I'm getting fed up (as I'm sure many other people have), and I'm tired of being tossed around between tech support representatives for hours. All I want to do is edit some video. How can I get my computer to recognize the camera? Thanks for your time, Cory

In Device Manager do you see the IEEE 1394 listed as a device?

I do have an IEEE 1394 controller listed in my Device Manager.

Do you have Windows XP SP2 installed?  Try disabling the Microsoft firewall that came with SP2 because it could be blocking the firewire port.  Also try removing the firewire in Device Manager and let windows install new drivers for it on the next reboot.  If these things don't work, you should consider removing SP2 and go back to SP1 as some people have resorted to doing.  You might find additional help in the Microsoft XP forums in the video message boards.  Good luck.
