Inspiron one 2020 CD drive

Hi. I just got an Inspiron one 2020. When I tried to use the CD drive, it's unlike anything I've seen before. Since it's vertical, there's no "tray" (like I'm used to seeing). And the "spindle" is larger than the central hole in my CD. Can someone help me understand how to use this drive. Thanks.

Consider the issue closed. I just needed to push harder to seat the DVD on the spindle. I had to push a lot harder than I felt comfortable with, but it eventually accepted the disk. It may have just been a little bit stiff because it was new and had never been used.

Hi Amogh. I tried putting a cd in, but nothing happened. I put it in so that the label side was visible to me, mirror side against the tray. The drive doesn't even show up on the file explorer.

Hi shelquis,

You may use the optical drive by keeping the disk vertical on the tray vertically. Push the tray inside and the system should be able to read the disk. The spindle to read the disks is present inside the system and not on the tray itself.

Please feel free to reply for any further questions. I will be glad to assist you.

You press the button and the tray pops out.  Its the same as a laptop drive.

Hi shelquis,

You may check in system BIOS if any of the CD drives is listed or not. Please follow the steps below:

  • Power on the system and tap at the ‘Dell’ logo
  • Go to ‘Boot Sequence’ tab listed under ‘System’ on left side
  • Check if CD drive is listed on right side.
  • Press to ‘Save and Exit’

I would suggest you to run hardware diagnostics on the system for hardware functionality, by following the steps below:

  • Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
  • When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
  • The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
  • In case any hardware component is bad, you will get a corresponding error

You may check in ‘Device Manager’ if ‘Disk Drive’ is getting detected. Please follow the steps below:

  • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen.
  • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’.
  • Click > sign next to ‘Disk Drive’.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you.

Dell-amogh g,

I completed the first two steps you have listed.  CD drive is listed in the BIOS and no errors from the diagnostic tool.

But when the computer boots there is no D:\ and disk drive is not in device manager.  Any suggestions?
