Is this an overheating problem?

I've been trying to render something on my 2.6ghz 8100 but my pc keeps rebooting after a while on its own accord which is incredibly fustrating because not only am I losing about an hours worth of render but also any work I'm currently doing at the time.

This has only just started today, before I would be able to use my pc to do some programming and render at the same time with no problems. The most recent bit of software I installed DX9 SDK, but I shouldnt think that might be whats causing the problem...I dunno. My ram has heatsinks on, but could the heatsinks not be working and causing the overheating..? My processor (power leaped p4 2.6 400fsb) is installed with the cpu fan it came with and the horrible green shroud removed. Its probably been a bit over a year since I installed it, could it be the processor? Or can it possibly be ram or some lame software?

oh also when I rebooted I checked the bios and it says 1.6ghz for my processor but in dxdiag and device manager it says 2.6ghz, is this normal? I dont go into my bios very much because there's nothing there to look at so it might have been like that for a while since I installed the new processor and not remembered

powerleap is an adaptor so you can use 478 cpus in a 473 socket or something like that right?

Take some canned air and blow out any dust inside your case. Clean your fans also, dust tends to build up on them causing them to underperform.

check to make shure the ramsinks are not shorting the chips. What is your heatsink made out of? copper aluminum? average fan speed. is the fan adustible (auto or manual) try finding a diff heatsink. and try to put green shroud back on if you still have it if you dont be creative and make something out of paper. pull of the heatsink too and check to make shure your thermel paste or pad is still good

Yeah I got it off www.powerleap.com and if I remember correctly its the 423 > 478 one. The specs for my pc is as follows:

P4 2.6mhz 400fsb
ATI 9800xt 256mb
768mb rambus (which ever its called) with copper heatsinks
40gb standard dell hard drive
120gb WD 8mb cache 7200rpm
240gb  WD 8mb cache 7200rpm

NEC 16x dvdrw ND3520A
Samsung DVD drive (standard dell)

Turbo-Cool Psu (cant remember which one it is, I think its the 425 deluxe)

Anything else I need to add?

I dont really have canned air handy to be able to give it a clean..

I get most of my PC parts from http://www.tigerdirect.com. they might have a heatsink you can use. You live in the UK i am guessing by how you spelt color(colour) i think they have a UK version call
http://www.misco.co.uk/ . Try that rndering again and report back

Thanks for the reply. I just spent an hour and a half cleaning the cpu heatsink and fan, now with it booted up it sounds like its doing something. I forgot to put the shroud back on tho and the case is tucked in beside my desk again..gah!

I checked the ramsinks and they were only warm and were a tight fit, not loose. These ones are all copper i think (they're a solid copper colour so I assume they're all copper)

The heatsink for the cpu I'm not too sure about, it doesnt have adjustable speeds just a goes at a constant. Its the one that came with the powerleap socket when I bought it, which leads me to ask the next question, can I possibly upgrade and use a different heatsink and cpu fan than to the one that came with my powerleap? Just wondering because I'm not sure whether I have to specifically use their homebrand heatsink + fan for my pc because the way its made so other ones wont fit (e.g. the heatsink + fan that came with my p4 2.6 is pretty big and I dont think that will fit at all)

Oh something else I forgot to mention my 9800xt is using Artic Cooling cos the original's fan stopped working properly.

I'm going to try and re-render that scene. Hopefully it wont crash my computer but I wont be able to find out till over an hours time.

An animation in 3dmax for a uni project I'm doing, this render only 10 seconds :/ I've been trying to find ways to cut down the rendering time but the only thing i found was to take out some lights in my scene which cut a few seconds off each frame but not much though. This short scene has bumpmaps on the walls, floor and arches (there's loads on the scene but I've hidden all but the one in this render) raytracing on my 2 bots and 70 odd lights. I think I might need to cut em down some more(ie the ones not in view) but they're all instances of each other so I'll have to delete and reposition 50 of them again...ARG!

I need a new pc for doing this but money is something I dont have right now and I have to put up with slow render times and find some more ways to cut down my render time

oops forgot to say something about the level editing bit, yeah farcry is a bit power hungry, try half life if you're interested in level editing. That should lighten the load off your pc. I don't know too much about level editing but I'm gonna do get into it after I finish this course

Haha yeah I am :] thanks for the links I'll take a look at them to see what they have.
34mins into the render, 3 hrs til it finishes and about an hour until it gets to the point where it usually crashes.. fingers crossed.
