Motherboard Compatibility. Precision 670.
Hello Ron and friends, I'm here again with persistence & still persevering.
My last set of post's on the Forum have left me with this niggling challenge of which I'm determined not to be beaten.
So far I've replaced two sticks (Matched memory) another Zeon correct processor plus bios battery, which leads me now to the Motherboard on this Precision 670, I called it Junk in my last post but there isn't any hair left to pull out and darn well digging my heels in on this one.
I know an old Tank aging well but I cannot bring myself to scrap it, this is the reason for one last ditched attempt to Phoenix the thing.
There are Motherboards on eBay and have different serial/part numbers two of which are MG 024 & MG 026 can anyone please help by giving me an idea of compatibility for my desktop.
Service Tag DR 5J62J motherboard serial number CN-OXC857-13740-62H-00017.
The problem I'm experiencing is boot failure, 6 beeps. led fault code Green Yellow Green Yellow. New Bios battery installed correctly and all memory slots investigated so has to be Motherboard? I'm going to try a new one then part it out if that doesn't work but need to know if correct one, Thanking You all once again in anticipation,

CN-0XC857 is made in china Dell part number XC857 which does not correspond to any known dell part number I have. Close doesn't count. I think you mean XC837 which is a UK Part.
Motherboard for 670 is HG593 with VRM KG229 which is required for 2nd CPU

????? Blimey I only asked about compatibility.
WOW! just needed to know if MG 024/026 will work. Thanks for this. Maybe error? PW S670 :- X837 is that what this refers too? if so many thanks I'll investigate further. Cheer's!

Motherboard model is on a sticker at top right corner of the board: eg: U7565--- or XC837---.
Check your CPUs: all motherboards accept legacy 64bit FSB800 Xeon DP (Nocona & Irwindale) CPUs up to the 3.8GHz/2MB L2 cache model, whilst only XC837 motherboards accept dual core Xeon DP 2.8GHz (Paxville SL8MA). Xeon MP CPUs are not accepted.
Dual CPU setups require identical CPUs and a VRM. In single CPU mode, remove the VRM.

Hi Paul,
I know you've been looking at motherboards on ebay. I actually have a Precision 670 that I stopped using awhile back and was just going to give away for parts or recycling. If you can tell me how to remove the motherboard and don't mind covering shipping, you can have it.
Don't know anything about compatibility or serial numbers but I can tell you it was working fine for me the entire time I've owned it. Just don't have most of the innards to test it at the moment, but like I said, it's just been sitting in temperature controlled storage for a few years.

Hi Bernie, how very kind of you. I am still well up for restoring the old Tank as it still has glitches. I see from your post that maybe other parts are possibly available? if so and not too far from Birmingham could I possibly purchase? I have developed a Love for these machines and back up seems paramount.

Dell actually have a very good service manual that shows how to remove/add parts, including the motherboard. 1st you remove the screw that secures the motherboard to the chassis, which you will find behind (or in front of) the power socket at the middle front of the board. Then, you simply lift up the 2 green tabs and the motherboard will rise up. Pull it slightly frontward and take it out.

No worries at all about the parts. It is an old warrior of a workstation, and I still have an affinity for XP, but I've been suckered into Windows 7 and all the hardware upgrades it requires so if the poor beast can still find a good home, I'm happy to offer whatever portion of it's still useful. Thing is, I live in the US, so I imagine shipping might be turn off for you. In any case, if you're still interested in any of the machine, let me know. I will be travelling abroad (westwardly) from this week until the end of April, though, so I may not get a chance to post anything to you till then. However, whatever I have that you may want, just let me know and I'll hold it for you.

Hello again Bernie, once again I sincerely thank you for your time and thoughts, however Ships in the night so to speak. I leave the UK in two weeks for a three month visit to my future retirement home in Bulgaria, I intended to take the Beast with me and may leave it for this trip. Internet in our village (Osikovo) is somewhat steam powered hence the old Tank. Bandwidth and speed leave a lot to be desired, the 670 I felt would be quite at home, plus if any thief decided to infiltrate our dwelling would not think about taking the heavy monster.

I had the same problem with a Precision 670, my motherboard (XC837). In my case, two of the 4, 1G sticks of memory were bad. These were: 1GB 2Rx8 PC2 3200R-333-11-G0. I pulled these two out and booted fine with 2G.
