Mouse not moving when startup

Around half the time when i restart my computer the cursor will not move (once the computer is fully loaded) when i move my Logitech MX700 mouse, yet the keyboard is fine.

I find that by removing the green non-usb plug in the back of the computer and then putting it back in seems to fix the issue. Yet due to the configuration of my computer in my cramped room this is incredibly difficult and i hate doing it.

Is there any way i can fix this problem without the plguging in and out? The mouse is fine, and my Dell 8300 XP Home recognises the existence of the mouse fine, yet just wont move when i ask it to sometimes.

Any remedy would be helpful!

No it occurs only after a complete shutdown/restart. I guess it started happening after i had cable internet installed, but dont see how they could affect it (though the stupid cable USB drivers kept making my comp freeze to the blue screen, that issue was resolved when i began using my ethernet card, and deletd those drivers), and i always ran my Norton Antivirus check very two days. I still dont know why it keeps happening, is it just that Dell's plugs are duds or could it be the fact that this is a logitech cordless/optical mouse?

I have same problem with my Intellimouse. The keyboard is fine.

Machine is Dell Dimension XPS Gaming Machine with Windows XPSP1a.

I have tried the steps in this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321122.

As long as I Standby or Hibernate I have no problems.  But the minute I shutdown computer and then start it up, my mouse may or maynot (70%not) work. Shutting it down again, by hitting the power button on the XPS and starting it back up, will make the Intellimouse work in 95% of the times.  If not I have to shutdown / restart again.

I think this is an XP problem.

Hi,
I have a Dim8300 2,8 HT with a Logitech MX Desktop (MX700 Mouse).
I have the same Problem. But i figured out that it's an isue to Hyperthreading or Intel Chipset Driver. Turn HT off and tell me if it's doing fine.
I even made a complete Reinstall of the OS with HT on using the latest available drivers. Everything was ok and worked great.  Then i applied the chipset driver and the problem appeared again. But turning HT off seems to work. But this should not be the solution.......

I'm having the same problem with my Dell 8300, I have the Logitech Cordless Mx Duo (MX700 Mouse). When I installed the mouse driver, the cursor will not move. I then started having other Issues with the PC, so I just formated the drive. After I Installed XP Pro (XP Home was preInstalled) I first Installed the mouse driver, No problem, I Installed the keyboard driver, No problem. I restarted the PC several times, No problem, I Installed the network adapter driver, No problem. I then Installed the Sound Max Audio driver, Cursor will not move after rebooting.

I am from the UK and have just received a Dimension 8300 with 3.2G processor, XP Home and use a Logitech wireless keyboard and MX700 mouse.

I had the blue screen of death on the first day (error message was something about Multiple IR Requests). When windows came up the mouse or the keyboard would not work. Sometimes neither worked so had to switch the machine off to reboot it.

Dell support (based in Bangalore, India) tried to help but suggestions did not work and eventually told me to contact Logitech.

Logitech solved the problem in 5 minutes. It is a problem when multiple user accounts are set up on XP (I have 4). The fix is to disconnect the round USB adaptor plug going into the keyboard socket at the back of the PC. Take off the round plug which leaves a USB plug. Plug the USB into one of the spare sockets and hey presto, all is well.

Hello Cee Gee, thank you very much for your reply.

I don't have multiple user accounts on my system, just the Administrator account, I will try your solution and post the result.

This seems to have fixed the cursor from freezing up, but my keyboard hotkeys still do not work correctly. Everything Is out of order, by that I mean that the "My home" hotkey opens the favorites and the "Favorites" hotkey opens the Media Center and so on.

Hi...I've just scanned this forum for solutions to the mouse locking problem.  I also received the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death almost minutes after I had started up a new machine (not very impressive when you want to demonstrate how great a new computer is to your family who are cynical).  I also get periodic mouse lock problems.  As the baseline to your machine is identical to mine, it would seem to be a reasonable and relatively non radical solution to a problem

When you changed over to the USB connection, did you need to reinstall drivers, or make any changes to individual user accouts?

On a legal note, I do wonder whether when you buy a system, and get an inherent fault from hardware sold by the vendor with the machine, you would have a right to demand a refund, as it would not be 'fit for purpose'.

I only know Australian sale of goods law and im sure that the chances of winning a suit against say Dell for a breach of fit for purpose laws are nigh on zero. Merchentable quality laws though could be breached.

Hey CeeGee ... I e-mailed Logitech about my problem with the keyboard hotkeys, and I never did receive a reply. I can only guess that there Is no fix for the problem, I don't think I will ever buy another Logitech product again.

Hi 'Rodgerpb'

Just to be clear, is your system an 8300 with the Logitech MX700 optical/wireless mouse and keyboard?

For personal interest, when you had the blue screen of death can you tell me what it said? Mine said MULTIPLE_IR_REQUESTS (or something close to this )

I did not have to reinstall anything when forced to use the USB as the system detected it automatically. However, I am annoyed at having to use a USB port (okay, I have plenty i.e. 8 +2 on the FP monitor, but that's not the point) as Logitech's solution is in fact a 'workaround'.

I did not change any user accounts either.

My feeling is that if you are not happy with having to use up a USB port with the Logitech equipmement Dell is likely to replace this for you with the same or other agreeable alternative although you must have gone through their support first. I am saying this purely because after using through Dell's phone technical support I was offered a replacement (on the basis the mouse/keyboard were 'not working' ) without any hints from me.

Hi Nomad559,

I would be interested to see what Logitech's answer is. Their UK tech support number is 0207 3090126. I'm sure many of us are curious to see there response. Would you indulge this community?

Cee Gee.
