'No audio device" - Dell Dimension 8300

I recently had to update the BIOS and then had WinXP reinstalled the Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection in order to reestablish my Ethernet connection with my network. After doing this, I did not get sound from my speakers. I went to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I went into the BIOS to see if the Audio was actually On. It was not. So, I turned it On, rebooted and WinXP detected New Hardware. I ignored the WinXP Hardware Install and inserted the Dell Resource CD: Drivers & Utilities and it seemed to install the driver software. When rebooting I did not get the WinXP Found New Hardware, but there is still no sound and when I got to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I attached my Plantronics USB Headphones because it did not require an On-Board sound card and I hoped that at least the headphones might work& they do not work, so I detached them.

I emailed Dell Support yesterday and hoped they would answer quickly. Unfortunately, no return email yet This is truly an inconvenience because I have a voice chat session scheduled for tonight. I would a grateful for help.

Ahhhhhhh!  It did not work.

Ok, I did some more online research and there is just to much information for me to try and piece together. Let me ask you this...

I am worried about loosing my installed program MS Office 2003 Pro.  However, if I have the CD, I am just not sure if I will be allowed to reinstall it because I already have 2-3 previous times.  So if possible and realistic, I'd prefer to avoid loosing it.

1. Opening the case to take out or put in stuff... this is like the black plage to me and I want to avoid this at almost any cost... plus, I truly belive that the actual hardware and cards are ok.

2. Clean XP Pro reinstall - I never have done one and I do not even know if I have the correct disks to complete the task.

So, what if i uninstall all the drivers and then reinstall acorrding to the web page you provided =  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&docid=1A0C0937D62A8739E0401E0A55174744&l=en&s=gen

Do you think that would be a good plan to try first?  I need step by step instruction or expanation on how to go about uninstalling all the drivers because, frankly, I have no clue.

I also, I have heard about an "XP repair" that allows you to keep programs and stuff -- is it something I should concider?

Thank you so much for your help thus far.  I really feel like a resolution to the issue is getting close.

Well, its 11:39PM, I'll see ya tomarrow...

Yup, the dreaded "no audio device" is a pain.  I wouldn't worry about reinstalling your programs - if you have the disks, you can uninstall and reinstall programs as many times as you want.

I think you're right that the hardware is fine - it's a glitch somewhere in the software.

I was under the impression you'd reinstalled XP yourself, so that was going to be an option, but there's other stuff to try first.

Here are a few last-ditch suggestions (#4 is a possible way to start completely fresh with the driver installs, as you suggested):

1)  Go into device manager, right click and uninstall the Soundblaster driver again, then do a complete shutdown, not just a restart.  After powering back up, if XP doesn't automatically detect the driver, use the Add Hardware wizard to point directly at the folder where you installed the drivers from the CD.

2) There is a patch/update for your Soundblaster card from Dell.  I do not know if this will address the issue, but again it won't hurt to try (this originated from the download page here ).

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R69382&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8300&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=1249&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=90207

3) If you have the XP disk, you can run a System File Check.  Usually a freshly installed operating system like yours doesn't have any problem with missing or corrupted system files,  but it won't hurt to give it a try (more detail on how it works HERE):

1) Put your XP install disk in the CD drive

2) Go to Start -> Run, type sfc /scannow

3) Let it run without interruption.

4) Look in System Restore and see if there's a restore point created before you attempted to install any drivers or programs at all - right after you got the PC back from the XP reinstall.  If you have one, you can restore back to that point, then start fresh with the recommended driver order, then with all your Windows updates and program installs.

Like you said, there's lots of little things to try, but it's a needle in a haystack.  I've been hunting for possible registry fixes, though I'm not really optimistic.  I personally would be annoyed at the person who reinstalled XP, especially if you paid for it - all the hardware should've been working correctly when you got it back....

oh, and yes. I didn't think much of it before, but I did have the computer check by Bet Buy Geek Squad... they charged me just to run some king of diagnostics to tell me that nothing was wrong?  So, I susspect they might have done something more than "diagnosticts" and never told me.

I think I have figured out a way to get you screen shots. The link goes to a sub directory of my ISP.  I don't know why access to the entire directory is not possible.  However, it is possible if the exact file is named... anyway, the below link is a word document containing screen shots of what I am seeing. You downlod it and it opens (provided you have

This 'needle in a haystack' is manotonous... is there somekind of repair disk?  I reasearched online and came accross http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml .  Is there anything on this page that could apply to my issue?

I did everything in you last posting (even installed that patch).  One thing I did not do was the System Restore because there is nothing back furter than when the problems started.

Still 'no audio device' ...

sfc /scannow finnished, but there were no reports, messages or anything, so I guess that the test was ok?

Read Simpswr's post for some great links to reinstall guides, including ones with step-by-step graphics:

If you run into trouble, post back on the XP Forum - plenty of experts in there who've done it dozens of times to help you out.

I'll cross my fingers for ya ! Good luck!

I give up... I do not want to waste any more of your time, my time, and running in what seems an endless time. So, I have finnally decided...

I have my peronal data backed up, I could care less about custom settings, any programs and applications are on their original CDs, and I have the Sound Blaster CD. I have the disk that came with my Dell8300. It says, "Reinsallation CD-Microsoft Windows XP Professional Including Service Pack 1 (I have a seperate update disk to upgrade to SP2).

1. Taking all the above information into account... do I have the correct CDs in order to reinstall WinXP and start fresh?
2. How do I begin? Should I detach all external devices like my printer and then just reformat the drive or what?

I was working on a reply and Dell kicked me out because I took too long writing it  - but I was essentially headed the same way.   Sounds like you've got everything you need.

I'm currently hunting for some good guides for you in the XP forum - as long as you take it step-by-step you'll be fine.  Hang on for just a bit....

Yeah, I get kick lots of times... I have nerve damage in my hands so I type slow... you know what helped a little - Signing -in click the "dave login" check box. I also found that if you hit the browser refresh button every few minutes it helps.

I am really glad that you didn't give up on me.  You seem very smart and a good person to ask about "reinstallation".

Anyway, I have to leave for a few hours anyway.  I was thinking maybe to research online before rushing into it like I seem to do all the time.  I thought of reinstalling later or at least starting it.  So waiting is not problem.

Have to go, thanks, see you later.

AKMARK,
Before you go through the trouble of completely reinstalling your operating system check this out. I'm about 95% sure I know what the problem is based on having installed Creative SB Live! drivers several thousand times. There's a step during the installation where it asks if you want to enable digital audio output. Make sure you select no for this or else the card will direct audio to the digital out port instead of analog, which if you're not using digital speakers that are plugged into that port will result in, you guessed it, no sound.

Something else I noticed after re-reading your initial post. You indicated that you turned the audio On in the BIOS, after which Windows detected new hardware. This means the device being detected at that point was the integrated audio, not the SB Live! card. You're installing the Creative drivers when Windows is looking for drivers for the integrated audio. You'll need to go back into the BIOS and turn audio Off again in order for the Sound Blaster card to be detected properly.

I did some research and asked some questions about 'reinsalling'. I feel comfortable (as possible), but due to "The Namek" post up above... maybe I should try and correct the problem first.

Alexandra = What was your reply before you were kicked out of the forum because you message was too long?

Namek = Let me try your advice and I'll get back to you.

Alexandra_P,
I couldn't even tell you how many clients used to call me with this problem after installing the SB Live! back when it was considered Creative's mainstream sound card. 9 times out of 10 it was because they'd chosen to enable digital audio output. :smileyhappy:

I reinstalled the Sound Blaster Live! Software by Creative Labs.  And just as before, new hardware detected… every thing goes in, but ‘no audio device’ in Device Manager -> Volume Tab.

I ran a diagnostic and this time -- Text of Dell Creative Diagnostics:

Hardware Detection Test: Pass

Wave Driver Test: Fail

MIDI Driver Test: Fail

Mixer Driver Test: Fail

Direct Sound 3D Test: Fail

Mixer Settings Check: Fail

Fix Message: The current problem cannot be fixed automatically.  Reinstall the software of your hardware to see if the problem can be solved.

Sorry, looks like whatever issue that I have falls into the 5% of uncertainty.  However, do you know of a way I could manually set for Analog? …and does this have anything to do with my ATI Graphics?

Namek has a great idea - I was so wrapped up in the whole driver thing it never occurred to me to check the sound card setup.  If that's all it was I'm gonna go crawl in a hole somewhere :) .

My reply was just more of the same - but a bit more drastic (emptying out the entire list of sound devices in safe mode and rebooting).  Somehow I doubt it would've helped....
