'No audio device" - Dell Dimension 8300

I recently had to update the BIOS and then had WinXP reinstalled the Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection in order to reestablish my Ethernet connection with my network. After doing this, I did not get sound from my speakers. I went to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I went into the BIOS to see if the Audio was actually On. It was not. So, I turned it On, rebooted and WinXP detected New Hardware. I ignored the WinXP Hardware Install and inserted the Dell Resource CD: Drivers & Utilities and it seemed to install the driver software. When rebooting I did not get the WinXP Found New Hardware, but there is still no sound and when I got to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I attached my Plantronics USB Headphones because it did not require an On-Board sound card and I hoped that at least the headphones might work& they do not work, so I detached them.

I emailed Dell Support yesterday and hoped they would answer quickly. Unfortunately, no return email yet This is truly an inconvenience because I have a voice chat session scheduled for tonight. I would a grateful for help.

It may not be necessary but just to be on the safe side I'd completely uninstall all the Creative software before reseating the card then do a fresh reinstall of the drivers.

The file sfman32.dll is almost certainly on the Creative CD, it's probably just several subdirectories deep & the installation wizard can't locate it unless you browse to the specific folder it's in. You can download a copy of the file from here or here.

ok, I've opened the case and resated the card. I hooked eveything back up. Its asking me for 'sfman32.dll' ... not on the soundcard's disk... now what?

OK, I thought about the following all day --

Do you think its the motherboard (onboard audio)?

What if I forget about reinstalling XP (cause somehow I doubt it would resolve my issue). Instead, what if I looked into getting an external sound card? Do you think that would resolve my problem?

Well, reseated the card, reinstalled everything... still no sound.  Control Panel -> Sounds/audio Devices -> Volume Tab = 'no audio device'.

I think there are really only a few things it could be at this point. Either the slot the SB Live! is in is malfunctioning, the card itself has an unusual hardware fault or there's some really odd hardware level conflict going on with the integrated audio chipset. When you reseated the card did you keep it in the same slot? If so I'd try moving it to a different one just for the sake of being thorough.

If it turns out the card is faulty you can get another one to replace it (I assume the 8300 is out of warranty at this point) or just remove it & turn the integrated audio back on then plug your speakers into the other green audio jack.

1) I had an idea to try plugging the speakers into each of the other hole-plugs (Black, Green, Blue, Pink, Yellow). But nothing changed... did I have to reboot each time to see an effect, if any, ?

Anyway, I think getting the onboard sound going is a good idea at this point like you said.  I admit, another tech. advisor on another sight told me to do that two days ago.

In order to get the onboad sound going what steps do I have to do besides remove the SB Card?

mmmm, there is only one green jack hole-plug... you think maybe if I try the black one?.... ya know what?  hold on...

I'm going to get the on-board sound going befor I run out and get anither sound card unless... will talking out the SB sound card and buying a USB external sound card act as a work-around?

No, it's not necessary to reboot the computer when moving the speaker signal cable between audio jacks. The green jack is for front channel output (2 or 2.1 speaker setup) & the black is for rear channel audio if you have 4 or more speakers. For a moment there I thought you'd had your speakers plugged into the incorrect integrated audio jack instead of the SB Live's green jack.

We're pretty much back to the other suggestions I made in the post prior to this one.

Yes, taking out the SB Live! and using an external sound card will act as a workaround. I'm not really sold on the idea of USB devices such as sound cards & certain other peripherals. It's been my experience as a tech that USB cable modems, wireless NICs and other devices that are usually internal tend not to work as reliably as their expansion card counterparts.

I went to take out the SB Live card. Originally when I just reseated the card in the same slot I didn't think anything of the fact that the SB Live was attached to the NIC card. It also seems there is another wire, maybe a power wire? In any case, I could disconnect the wire between the SB Live card and NIC card, but the other wire looks to be attached right to the SB Live card by a chip of some sort (I don't view this as normal). I just re-re-seated the SB Live card and decided to wait to hear from you.

How is there a cable from the sound card plugged into the NIC? According to the Sandra hardware profile you posted earlier your NIC is integrated (Intel Pro 100 VE), not an expansion card. The SB Live! card draws its power from the PCI slot it's sitting in so whatever the other cable is it's not a power cable. There are two versions of the SB Live! card shipped in Dell systems. The original is the CT4780 model, which you have if you purchased your system before Oct. 15, 2002. A diagram of it is located here. The last model of SB Live! card Dell shipped is the SB0200, which you can see here. Which do you have?
