'No audio device" - Dell Dimension 8300

I recently had to update the BIOS and then had WinXP reinstalled the Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection in order to reestablish my Ethernet connection with my network. After doing this, I did not get sound from my speakers. I went to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I went into the BIOS to see if the Audio was actually On. It was not. So, I turned it On, rebooted and WinXP detected New Hardware. I ignored the WinXP Hardware Install and inserted the Dell Resource CD: Drivers & Utilities and it seemed to install the driver software. When rebooting I did not get the WinXP Found New Hardware, but there is still no sound and when I got to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I attached my Plantronics USB Headphones because it did not require an On-Board sound card and I hoped that at least the headphones might work& they do not work, so I detached them.

I emailed Dell Support yesterday and hoped they would answer quickly. Unfortunately, no return email yet This is truly an inconvenience because I have a voice chat session scheduled for tonight. I would a grateful for help.

I detatched the wire to the Modem (easy, it was a tab). But the connection to the front panel... it looks pretty tight and feels like it also.

Say, if I tug a bit on the wire will it pop out?

Ok, my SBLive card looks like this...

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/acc/r45590/en/connect.htm

Now I know what I was trying you describe to you ealier. Ok, great find. It is true "pictures are worth a thousand words"

The connection that I said connected to the NIC --must be the Telephone answering connection, which I never use. So its connected the Modem... I confusded the Modem and NIC.

What I thought was a power wire is actually the connection to the front panel. Its in there pretty tight. So, how do I disconnect it?

Yours is the SB0200 then. There should be a little tab on the top side of the cable just like there is on the end that's plugged into the card. It should come out the same way.

It should, although I recommend pulling the actual connector rather than the cable in order to make sure you don't break the cable. Worst case scenario you may have to take the front bezel off too in order to get at the I/O panel where the other end of that cable is plugged in.

Sorry I took sooo long to finalize this post.  I got some held as I am not experienced enough -- added a new 200GB, 2700RPM  primary drive, reformatted the old one and put it back as a slave drive, reloaded windows xp and the old drivers... good to go with sound and everything... proplem solved!

Thanks!
