PCI / USB Controller Driver

I was running the pre-release version of XP Professional until my 6-month license expired. Not really wanting to spend the $200 to keep it, I have gone back to my version of Win98 SE. After finally getting most of the drivers and devices reinstalled and working on my system, I still cannot get my USB devices detected.

When Windows starts, I get a dialog box telling me that a PCI Universal Serial Bus controller has been detected, but I can't find the drivers to finish the installation.

There is nothing under the download section of support.dell.com.

I'm running Win98 SE on a Dimension L500c system. Can ANYONE shed some light on this? Feel free to be technical... I'm a hard core pc user... but this one little problem is driving me nuts.

Thanks.

yeah, I have USB enabled in BIOS, which I also upgraded as well, so I know it's not a problem there.

Also, I have already tried the .reg file you linked to, and as I thought, it is only for scanner troubles, of which I have none. :-)

yes, using an intel board and I should have known that I'd have to do that first. I have since installed the chipset drivers, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to start over again.

Have you checked Device manager to see if you have any conflicts in any of the USB areas?

Are you using an Intel board and recently reformatted your Hard Drive?....If so the driver your speaking of has to be loaded first before any of the other drivers.....did the same thing myself last year....but as i asked earlier you should be seeing conflicts in device manager ( exclamation mark in a yellow circle ).....the driver you should load first is the USB Universal Host Controller

Hope this helped.....or if its irrelevent to your problem please disregard......

I'm not sure, but look at this:

I assume your USB is enabled in the bios setup...

What you need to install is the chipset drivers. But it might be too late. The chipset drivers should always be loaded first after installing windows. You can try to install them now. If windows is or gets flaky then you will probably have to reformat. Here is a link to get the drivers.

IM_PNT_CEL_L___C〈=EN&lib=27&os=W98&searchtype=filter&devid=183&type RVR" target=_blank>http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/download.asp?fileid=R8259&format=5586&sid IM_PNT_CEL_L___C〈=EN&lib=27&os=W98&searchtype=filter&devid=183&type RVR

They are also on the resource CD..

Sorry to intrude, but does this apply to my system also?
I recently reformatted and didn't install the chipset drivers but everything is working fine. Maybe they're setup on my cd that way?

Can I still install the ATA driver now? And if so, where do I get it and how do I install it?
Thanks,
Mike
