PnP4 error issue solved?

Hey,

we have a Dell Dimension 3000 several years old, out of warranty and have already replaced it with a new Dell XPS laptop. The old Dimension will not boot into Windows XP and there is an error message saying the computer will not boot beyond PnP4 checkpoint. I've searched the web, tried to ask Dell tech but since it's out of warranty no one will give out any information for free. Seems like there are no solutions that I can find on line either. Since it's my daughters computer she wants to recover her iTunes library if possible should we be able to find a solution for the problem. Does anyone have the solution, possible clue on how to fix or should we start using the Dell Dimension desktop for a boat anchor?

"PNP" refers to "Plug and Play" and PnP4 generally is a video problem, from what I find doing a google search.  If you have a separate Video Card, reseat the card (reseat - with the PC powered off unplug then plug back in) and see if that makes a difference.  There are diagnostic lights on the rear of the motherboard and also some "beep" codes, do you get any of that?  HERE

is the Dell troubleshooting section of the manual.

How far does it get in the boot sequence?  Can you access the BIOS (Setup) - F2 at boot up.

If it gets to the point that the PC is "done for", you can take the hard drive out, get an external USB enclosure for the hard drive, install it in the enclosure and you can then connect it to the XPS via USB and get the iTunes files off (and use the hard drive for whatever storage). The 3000's hard drive is a PATA (IDE) interface type drive.

This also worked for the Dimension 4600 that had died on me recently.  Thanks for the help!
